Depends, as others said, what you are looking for. You can get a decent Timex for under 50 bucks, I believe. The Bulova watch I'm wearing now cost about 200, but is worth every penny to me.

same here--I've got a $250 Bulova watch that has a classic design; I've had it for about four years and am thinking about buying another of the same before it becomes unavailable. I think you have to pay a little more for a nicely designed watch, the lower-priced watches are lacking in that department.

On sale for $25. It's a fairly decent Timex that does its job very well. It has a surprisingly simple design for such an inexpensive watch (black strap, black face, white hands and numbers). Oh, and it's analog, not digital. I got sick of digital watches a year or two ago, and got this one as a replacement.

I've been in a professional work environment for 25 years. In that time I've owned three Timex watches that cost $30 max. The one I am wearing now is analog, which I prefer over digital, and is ten years old.

Oh, by the way, I have never been asked what kind of watch I owned or how much it cost during a job interview. I was almost never late for anything, so I guess what I have owned worked just fine. If you want to pay at least $100 for a watch to wear to work, I'd be glad to sell you the one I am wearing for......., let's say.......$125. Then you can proudly say you spent over $100 for your watch.

A nice watch is a great accessory.

A Tag Heuer is really nice and they run about $2K.

On the other hand, my husband has a really nice Citizens. It think it was about $800. It's really nice.

I don't like to see a Rolex on a guy, personally. It's a bit pretentious. And when I see a Rolex on someone and it's not a vintage piece that looks like it was handed down to him and he's wearing so-so clothes and driving a so-so car I think, "Loser. The watch is a fake or he should spend his money more wisely."

I wear my watch every single day and I NEVER look at it for the time. I have a Palm PDA, a cell phone and a portable. The watch is just another piece of jewelry to me.

Got a Tag Heuer 6000 series like this one (sadly they don't make this model any loner) from my little brother many years ago and I still love it! I could have never afford to buy it for myself. Amazing watch and it's in excellent condition. The scratch-resistant sapphire crystal really saved me a few times when I was careless and banged it on sharp metal objects. Frankly, I'm surprised that after 15 years of use that it's held up so well. My brother paid alot for it, $1400 I think. So boy was I happy when he handed it down to me. When and if this one ever breaks down, I'll save up to get another Tag Heuer. Best watch ever, IMHO.

I bought just before moving to Taiwan (I actually don't need a watch, but it's useful when travelling). However, I found out it is the favoured watch of terrorists, which was nice seeing as I was flying from the UK over the weekend of our 'plastic bags only on flights'.

But honestly, these expensive watches are a waste of money, get something cheap, give the rest to charity. It's just a watch. I bet you're carrying a cell phone too, just use that.

I'm very fussy about watches, meaning I like practically none of them. The only ones I tend to like are dual display alarm chronographs, usually only from Seiko. The nice ones tend to be $700-$1200. That said, I've once seen a pretty decent one from Omega, that one was around $3,500.

Personally, I'm of the "buy a watch for life" school of thought. Even if it seems expensive at first, a good watch will last you forever, and never go out of style.

I agree about TAG Heuer being fantastic watches… but I guess they are way over the 'decent watch' scale, to rate then as 'decent' is kinda weird, I can not think about a great number of watches able to compare with TAG models… kinda like rating a Mercedes-Benz being a decent car… HA!!

Tags are really at the low end of the 'luxury' watch market, they are decent, but nothing overly special (this is coming from a Tag owner). If you want top end you would want a Patek Philippe, Breguet, A Lange & Sohne, Vacheron Constantin etc. I would settle for a new Panerai or IWC which are probably the next step up from Tags & Omegas etc.

I inherited a beautiful Omega from my father in law - my wife gave it to me as her wedding present. I've also got a much loved Oris which I bought for about $1800 at the time. Both are fully mechanical, I can't stand Quartz watches.

Well, I just think that from a moral sense it has to be a certain limit… I don't want to think about how much are those top end watches you are talking about, that could be kinda… hum… an obscene price

A $1.99 quartz watch will give as accurate time as a $1 million dollar Swiss watch.

So really, it's only style, features, and durability that you can buy. Certainly for $25 you can find a basic metal watch that'll last forever.

I got this Citizen. About $450 retail. Found it on eBay for $110 brand new from Singapore. Fake? Probably. Fell off the back of a truck? Probably. But the thing works perfectly and looks great.

Even a $10 watch tells time accurately but next to nobody uses watches for time anymore just for fashion. Cell phones are the new watches.

No more than $100 for a "copywatch" from the streets of Hong Kong. Looks great, works great, and lasts. Most people will never know the difference, and IMHO anyone who spends $20000 on a watch is insane.

I'm wearing an Elgin right now. It cost about $30, it looks like a Tag Hauer-but not enough to make it seem I'm wearing a knock-off copy of an expensive watch-and it keeps excellent time.

I think that the "professional work environment" alligator mentioned above needs some clarification. WHAT professional work environment? In health care, anything that's not just utilitarian comes off as being showy. (And attorneys with their fancy fountain pens and expensive watches just look like they're flashing their high fees, not any style.)

Some people can't imagine spending $10,000 for a watch when you can get a perfectly functional one for $10. The way I see it is that the time keeping portion of the watch (the movement) only costs about $200, the other $9,800 goes to jewelry. Other than cufflinks and tie tacks, it's pretty much the only jewelry men can wear, so they some people tend to go a little overboard. I wouldn't ever pay that much personally, but I have no problem with it.

I have a few watches, the most expensive of which is about $130... a Seiko SKX025J2.

Another vote for Tag. And I do think they still come in handy (watches). My cellphone is in my pocket most of the time. And there are still places where you don't have clocks, PDA's computers etc... i.e golf course, casinos, bars, yada yada yada. A quick glance at your watch is easier than pulling out your phone/pda/laptop etc.

And yes, it is still also an accessory to attire. Although my Tag is so beat-up.. it probably could use a new band.

As for cost - whatever you feel comfortable with. I always wanted a tag.. so I dropped just over 1K for it. However, I'm also expecting this to last FOR FRIGGING EVER .
