I just wanted to start a thread saying how much I've come to love that little Dictionary.app. I've recently been doing a lot of proof-reading and it's so handy. It's little brother - that small dictionary panel that can pop up in cocoa apps is great too.

It just seems like something a computer should have. I don't know if Apple supplies non-English users a version in their native language, I hope so though. I'm actually British, but it still works fine for the vast majority of words (it normally has the British word in there too).

I just found it occasionally has pictures you can click on to enlarge as well, great.

Its widget is a let down though - you can't select text in it.

Oh that is pretty bad, I suppose this might be an issue with licensing? They should look into incorporating one of the free online dictionaries for other languages. Imagine how cool it would be to have a complete dictionary for every language that OS X ships in, in every copy.

Perhaps if someone starts a petition etc. for other languages they will take note.

OmniDictionary is freeware and has a French localization (though the definitions are returned in English, quel domage).

I'm quite certain that a petition will do nothing to increase their awareness.

As with anything Apple does, international support is sadly down-prioritized. Most countries don't even have native spelling.

I do love it for writing english though, which is what I do 90% of the time.

And the rest of the time, he writes in Australian!

He's got Kangaroos loose in the top paddock, that one does.

I would like to see a built in Spanish dictionary. Still, nothing beats diccionarios.com for Spanish. Worth the subscription. Absoloutly worth the subscription.

cheers

I wouldn't mind a Spanish dictionary, but a German one would be way more useful.

Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the United States and the entire Western world.

But I am curious, why would a German dictionary.app be way more useful?

cheers

That may be, but it's only the sixth most used language by Mac OS X users.

Because it's my native language.

Quite, but as you well know people don't always use the OS in their native language. Even if available. A dictionary would be convenient for them though because they still write and speak their native language.

Yes, I figured as much, but you should then have written: but a German one would be way more useful to me.

I would think that makes the default language spanish (as in default localization), wich would be rather useless since Mac OS X includes the Spanish localization.
