Since Snow Leopard, all my image files were set to open with Preview.

I set them all to open with Photoshop. This is OK with TIFFS.

With Jpegs, it's a problem.

Those JPEGS created by Photoshop I want to open with Photoshop.

Those pulled from the web I want to open with Preview.

Snow Leopard doesn't seem to be able to see the difference.

Have you found a way to get around this Snow Leopard bug?

It's not a bug. It's a feature. Get used to it.

Mac Dev Center: Launch Services Programming Guide: Launch Services Concepts

Note: In Mac OS X version 10.6 and later, Launch Services no longer considers file creator signatures when binding documents to applications. Launch Services ignores the creator signature when it’s attached to a document. In addition, the functions LSCopyKindStringForTypeInfo and LSGetApplicationForInfo ignore the parameter containing the creator signature.

It's not a bug. It's how the OS is designed to work now.

It looks more like the loss of a feature: the creator signature.

I'd like to tell the operating system to open all JPEGs on my desktop with Preview.

Launch services taking the location of a file into account. Is this yet possible?

It does not seem to be possible any more. Just set the app you use more often as the default and use "Open with" for the other.

Or you could just change the file type you are using in Photoshop. That might be easier.

There is a workaround.

I can, e.g. highlight all jpegs on my desktop, press option, choose file - show inspector. Then you can change the open with for all selected icons at once.
