BBC News - China: Teenager 'sells kidney for iPad'

A teenager in China has sold one of his kidneys in order to buy an iPad 2, Chinese media report.

The 17-year-old, identified only as Little Zheng, told a local TV station he had arranged the sale of the kidney over the internet.

Illegal agents organised a trip to the hospital and paid him $3,392 (£2,077) after the operation.

With the cash the student bought an iPad 2, as well as a laptop.
so... for the laptop he bought a Lenovo or something? geez...

Well, you only need one kidney, right?

Good thing he didn't have a wife that also wanted one.

Presumably the value of having the iPad now outweighs the risk of some sort of kidney disease later.

The question is, what does he do when the iPad 3 comes out?

iPad will be obsolete in a few short years. His kidney will last a lifetime. Raw deal. Like Best Buy's buy-back program!

I have two responses.

1. Maybe this is Steve Jobs ultimate plan. Make products so "insanely great" that people will trade their organs in for them, thus insuring him immortality.

2. I love how this kid got $3,000+ bucks, bought all sorts of things like a laptop and who knows what, but because he also bought an iPad, the story is now, KID TRADED KIDNEY FOR IPAD, OMG! iPad iPad iPad! SEO GOLD!

Excessive media coverage of Apple is starting to annoy me, and I'm a longtime Apple fanboy. A WWDC Keynote should not be the lead story on CNN.com for the better part of a day. It's just stupid.
