I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

As a Missouri resident I must say that I appreciated the hilariousness of this move. I get how the Office of Public Defenders is trying to get media attention and make a statement about the ongoing budget cuts that are severely impacting the poor in the legal system. But the reality is that Gov. Nixon (D) has to deal with an overwhelmingly GOP State Legislature which controls the purse strings. So while doing while doing this to a sitting governor gets more media attention ... doing it to someone in the State Legislature leadership may have borne more fruit.

I was just reading about this. Hope they do force him into serving until he fixes their budget.

It's a boss move. Hoping this keeps getting traction seeing as this is a problem all over the country, and another issue with our justice system.

I'll bet there is one or two more members of the state bar among that legislature. They aren't safe from the same trick.

The more I read about this, the more I like Michael Barrett (director of Public Defenders). He and Gov. Nixon used to work together, and Barrett was appointed to his current position. He could have relaxed, taken the public paycheck, and let the conviction rate go up. Then optionally run for another office.

Instead, a political appointee ... is fighting an uphill battle to actually do his job. How often do you see that.

You have to consent beforehand for that to work and he apparently didn't. With fewer people in Missouri actually paying taxes than ever before, it's no small wonder the OPD is in a pickle.

No-one else is saying that consent is required. Have you read the statute? (I haven't)

They should do this everywhere that has an overburdened public defender system.

If it's true you need consent beforehand the statute is toothless.

No-one else. As in, no-one except the guy trying to weasel out of it.
