Hey chaps.
Problem.

I need to play back an audio file through Skype. Not sure how to do it (short of putting the USB handset up against the speakers, which would be crap).

Basically, I need to call someone then press "play" and have the file play.
Mac or Windows, either's good.
Any ideas?

What hardware are you using? If you have separate audio in and out jacks you can just run a cable from one to the other. That should work.

Failing that, jack an iPod into the audio input and choose external mic as input in Skype/sound prefs.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Hmmm. That might work - I'll have to test to see if I can switch audio in on the fly.

Alternatively you could wait for the inevitable release of Microsoft Windows Skype Office Xbox Live Exchange 7 Ultimate 64-Bit-Use-Audio-Out-As-An-Input-Edition 2013.

Service Pack 12.

It'll probably be out either next week or sometime in 2020.

Heh.

Think I've found something which may do the job:

Record msn, record skype, ... | Share music | Text to speech | ...

Now I just need to find a recording of a nuisance call (i.e. "you've won a holiday in Florida, just press 2 to enter!") in a US/Canuck accent.

The solution to this problem is to use iChat instead of Skype.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Are you sure?
Not more like "I want $X million in used bills in a brown paper bag in the trash at the corner of ... if you want to see ... alive again."

What are you up to?

Until iChat can call regular phone lines, no it's not.

Let's just say I need to get in touch with someone and need to have something ready to go in case someone else in the household picks up the phone.

Is that an offer? $100 in it for a good impression of a telemarketing call.
(Of course, I could record an actual telemarketing call but they don't call me when I need them to!)

Cycling 74's SoundFlower should do it.

Would require first switching sources and then Starting playback of the audio file.

I was just about to suggest the same. Cycling mentions Skype on their website as one way of using SoundFlower.

I'm going to guess this is for calls by the secret boyfriend. If the right girl answers, conversation as usual. If anyone else answers - insurance sales pitch. In a female voice to allay suspicion.

It could be a neat workaround if others in the house disapprove of the boyfriend. Say on religion or hygiene grounds. You should have multiple sales pitch calls in different voices, so they don't hear the same one too many times.

Not sure my iSight cam is that good at recording audio, but I could try. Have a script, or should I make up something ridiculous?

<breaks out telephone operator voice>

Thanks. I'll PM when I've thought of something.

You should find someone in India. Most people hang up on those poor guys after a few syllables.
