Three.

For some strange reason, when he entered the kitchen I had a vision of him looking out a window from inside the cooler, smiling and pulling a pin from a grenade with his teeth.

And then the kitchen explodes.

So, if we are seeing people in the flash sideways that have already died, anybody think we will see Boone, or his sister, or the stupid diamond smugglers, or Mr. Echo, or Charlie, or even Locke?

We've already seen Locke in a flash sideways. So far, though, only the living characters of focus (or at least their bodies) have been featured in a flash sideways. Those who are dead island-side have only been shown as supporting characters in the flash, such as with snippets of Charlie and Boone on the plane.

Ah, I missed that... I have had to miss a few minutes of each of the last few episodes.

Any theories on why Desmond is back? Is he our "savior"?

Think we'll see Juliet in sideways world?

I really don't care. It's entire function so far this season has been to serve as filler and answer the occasional "what if?". I'm sure however it fits into the finale will feel ham-fisted and leave me unsatisfied.

I realized after about five episodes of the first season that the ending would never be satisfying. When it ends it ends, but I think this is more the journey, less the destination.

Yes, that's pretty much the way it works. However the introduction of the sideways-and-past universe/timeline really takes it to the next level.

It's like they wanted to avoid answering all the questions they've brought up.

Great episode! Loved seeing Penny again. It's the same place that Desmond and Jack met too. Has Charlie figured out that he can't die and was showing Desmond?

Maybe charlie and Desmond can move between the alternate universes.

And to the "do we see dead people from Island Reality in Altareality", well there's the science teacher, ben's dad, boone, Daniel, presumably Charlotte, Mikhail...

And I think to put them all in these different roles, the alternative reality had to have stemmed from a long time ago.

Desmond getting himself killed? So far, all we know is that he got himself pushed down a well with water at the bottom. Desmond has survived quite a bit, and Locke already survived a fall down that well (or, at least a similar well). I'll be surprised is Desmond is dead.

So do you think Desmond tried to run over wheelchair Locke so he can't be the smoke monster? so he can't push him in the well? what do you think?

Desmond was seen in next episode's preview, bloodied but alive and sitting at the bottom of the well.

Why would anyone think Desmond is dead?

I enjoyed the look of horror on MiB's face when Desmond said he was unafraid.

Speaking ofĀ ā€¦

Since Iā€™m far too lazy to read through 16 pages of talk about a show I stopped watching about halfway through the first season (and this is what? Season 3,492?): did they ever tell us what those damn numbers meant? The title of this thread has been annoying me for years now.

same here. MiB couldn't have such an unknown quantity roaming around while his plans were coming to fruition. especially not one so confident and relaxed. probably creeped him out.

They haven't specifically revealed it, no.

I did find an interesting coincidence in that the two main writers of the show are NY Yankees fans, and the numbers correspond to some of jersey numbers that have been retired by the Yanks:

4: Lou Gehrig
8: Yogi Berra
15: Thurman Munson (died in plane crash)
16: Whitey Ford
23: Don Mattingly
42: Jackie Robinson and soon to be Mariano River

That's the best I can do for ya.

Ok, I can help a little further. I had forgotten the numbers were featured in an episode that didn't explain their full significance but did expand on their purpose. From Lostpedia:

The numbers were featured in the episode Lighthouse when Jack learned that if the Lighthouse mirror were turned to a certain degree, it would show the lives of a particular person. The people who were shown at 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, and 42 were the remaining candidates to replace Jacob, explaining why the names were grouped together with those numbers in Jacob's cave. (The only exception to this is Kate, whose corresponding number 51 is not one of the original sequence).

To be fair I didn't mean that Desmond would be really and truly dead. But he was supposed to die in the swan and the electromagnetic generator as well so...

Nah. He did to Locke what Charlie did to him; give him a near-death experience to help him remember the Island. I think Hurley just got lucky remembering the Island the easy way.

Each candidate is assigned a number. According to the cave wall:

4 - Locke
8 - Reyes (Hugo)
15 - Sawyer
16 - Jarrah (Sayid)
23 - Shepherd (Jack)
42 - Kwon (Jin or Sun - no one knows which yet)

FakeLocke was definitely worried about Desmond. I knew he was going to end up down the well. Poor Des!

Anyone else think Michael was FakeLocke? Why should Hurley believe Michael?

So, about the child apparition - it seemed like an older boy than the first, with darker hair, but apparently it was the same actor. So was it supposed to look different from before?

I figured he was there to remind Smokey that he couldn't kill Desmond, but apparently he is fair game.

Not like she's ever been wrong though. <BOOM>

However, it appears that Locke was with Desmond during all the Michael visits. Not even the smoke monster can be two places at once!

And I thought that Smokey was limited to assuming the form of a person whose actual corpse is on the island but I can't remember where I read/heard that. Maybe related to revealing the real Locke's body?

I don't know. I'm still a little curious as to how he knew what was going through John locke's head when he was murdered off island, but I imagine its unimportant plothole.

He did take the form of Ricardo's wife to trick him, remember? That's the only exception I can think of at the moment.

I had thought of that one (and I'm sure there are others I'm missing) but I was also thinking it could have been Ricardo hallucinating at that point? All signs do point to Smokey assuming her form, tho'....

Eko's brother. Jack's father. Ben's mother.

I'm not ascribing these to the smoke monster, but these are exceptions.

Good call on Eko's brother and Ben's mother. But Christian's body was technically on the island the whole time: he was part of the cargo on Flight 815.
