Well I can hardly tell the difference.

CNN or BBC?

Does this come from using the same CMS or something like that?

They both have red at the top with similarly organized sitenav therein... Beyond that there's not a whole lot else in common.

And in this case, CNN beat BBC to the punch.

I have to agree.

Red at the top, and a bunch of English words organized into paragraphs and headlines below - who's ripping off whom?

The BBc site makeover caused a bit of a rucus here in the UK. A lot of the previous functionality got hidden, the layout came in for a lot of criticism, particularly the spacing and the fact that it certainly appeared to riff off the CNN site.
Of course the BBC ignored the comments and sailed serenely on and we've all forgotten it now.

Certainly the site looks "dumbed down" compared to its old look and has lost some of the gravitas the bbc used to project.

Most news sites have that feel. If you made the Onion red instead of green it would also look like this.

There are only so many ways you can make a news website look and still have it work decently.
