I was zapped by a power surge from a lightning bolt that hit my tv antenna, leaving my 6400 Performa bootable to the desktop, clock running, but with a frozen mouse that will not allow a restart, or anything else. I can shut down with the power button, reboot to the frozen condition, but cannot start the system CD holding down the C key. Is it the junk heap, or might there be a remedy?

it's weird that it still boots up.. try unplugging any other stuff you might have in it (printer, scanner, maybe even keyboard and mouse). try booting up while holding the shift key (this turns extensions off). if it works now, then something's gone awry in one of your extensions, possibly through hard drive damage caused by the power failure.
whether the extensions-off works or not, then try holding Command-Option-P-R (all at once) while the computer's starting up. This "zaps" (resets) the PRAM, where some simple system settings are stored, including perhaps one that's freezing your computer after startup. Keep holding and let it chime 3 times. this may stop the freezing. if it doesn't, it may at least let you start from the system cd to attempt to repair the hard drive or reinstall the system.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, I had tried all of your suggested remedies without any success. Got me stymied.

Try disconnecting your harddrive and start from CD. If it works, select CD as start-up disk and reboot with HD connected. If it works, run Disk Warrior.

Perhaps your keyboard/mouse/CD drive got damaged in the surge... do you have another system you can test them on?

Or, other parts you can substitute into the 6400 to test them out?
