Hi, I just borrowed a 160GB portable HD from my friend because I want to completely re-install 10.5 on my macbook pro. This is my first time doing this though. Besides the obvious things like movies, music and apps, what should I back up so that all my app registration, prefs, etc. are the same?
Also, is there a (free) program that does this work for me??
thank you

Time Machine. Plug in the drive, you'll be prompted to use it as a backup source. Click OK and let it do it's thing. Once the backup is complete, you'll have a complete backup of your Home folder as well as your Applications folder.

I tried to, but I got this error:
This backup is too large for the backup volume.
my Mac HD claims to be using 139 GB, but the time machine window says 148GB is available on the drive.

Carbon Copy Cloner.
You can chose what data you want to copy. It will make a bootable backup.

You can choose with Time Machine also. Just go to System Preferences and click on Time Machine. Click on Options and here you can select what folders NOT to backup if all you want is your home folder. Sure, its not a bootable backup, but hey, it's a start.

Well I am facing a dilemna with my 160 gigabyte drive on Time Machine up to 25.3 gigabytes left. Should I reduce the frequency of backups in this case? What should I do to free up space on it?
My internal drive is only 80 gigabytes.

I'd follow Turtle's advice, CCC is free, excellent and may do what TM won't. Worth a try. Oh, and erase the BU drive first.

Another backup utility, although not free (shareware) is SuperDuper. It too makes a bootable backup. Many forums praise both CCC and SuperDuper. It comes down to a matter of preferences. I've been using it for three years. Check it out.

I know this is a bit late in the game but I bet it's because that portable drive is formatted to Fat 32. You'll need to format it as HFS+.
