I'm probably a little premature but I was chatting with an Apple support person yesterday and she let slip that iCloud was launching today. (Later in the day I was chatting with a different support person and he vehemently denied it was going live). Sure enough when I went on to the iCloud.com site, it no longer showed as being in beta and allowed me to log in... well... sort of. It immediately tells me I need to go to the Lion System Preferences iCloud pane. Which doesn't exist yet. Or to log in from an iOS 5 device.

It seems they just can't get the launches going in a smooth manner.

Apple announced it was going live today. OS X 10.7.2 will be released today today as well with the necessary iCloud prefpane. iOS 5 also is launching today.

Yeah, it didn't migrate over my contacts. I'll have to restore them when I get home. I've also lost access to all of my e-mail until I update an iOS device. (even cloud) Strange .. reserving judgement for now.

Worse: The iCloud for Windows control panel is gone. So, I need to wait until I get home, or get a phone upgraded in order to access my mailbox. (and restore my contacts.)

Yeah ... crash and burn. The price of being an early adopter.

The control panel for windows is supposed to be here:

It was painful, but I finally got it up.

Unfortunately, it no longer lets me send from my .mac address on the mobile device. Only my .me address. Is anyone getting this same issue?

If I need to change e-mail addresses, I might just change e-mail providers as well.

Same here. We paid our $99/year so you'd think we'd get some kind of priority over those who are jumping in now for free.

Why should MobileMe go out with less of a bang than it started with?

I can see it now - Tim Cook walks into the room of iCloud developers and asks:

"Can anyone tell me what iCloud is supposed to do?"

(hapless engineer gives a long answer)

"So, why the f--- doesn't it do that?"

I got this too. Even though my primary address is me.com it still automatically uses mac.com as my send address because thats the address used as my AppleID.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Not at all, here — I bought the iWork DVD, though, not through the App Store.

I'm guessing we'll see an update fairly soon.

How can I delete a photo from Photostream, other than waiting 30 days?

How do I stop Photostream from showing all different versions of a photo once it's been edited in iPhoto?

vs.

How do I tell Photostream to ****ing respect that I've ROTATED an image to be right-side-up?

In one case, it's not accepting an edit as definitive and syncing two versions, and in the other, it refuses to acknowledge an edit (rotation) AT ALL.

Methinks this iCloud thing will take a little bit of tweaking.

So far, though, nothing has shit the bed.

I have the opposite problem. My AppleID is @mac.com, but it will ONLY let me send from the .me version of my address.

There's absolutely no excuse for Apple not to allow functionality for @mac.com addresses.

No thats the same problem I have. Even though I log into iCloud with my .me address, because its an old AppleID it irrevocably sets mac.com as the sender address and then refuses to send mail from a mac.com address. Bit of an oversight really.

This is stupid. THe iPhone ONLY lets me send from @me.com, and the iPad ONLY lets me send from @mac.com.

The end result is I can't use this as a consistent e-mail account. (and since it's having reliability problems today, maybe that's for the best.)

This has been my primary e-mail account for years. Not sure if I can keep using it going forward.

My iCloud mail (and backup) has been down all day. Sort of makes this a theoretical discussion.

"What's iCloud supposed to do?" Indeed.

My iCloud Mail works fine, although I don't have much in it.

BTW, I find it odd that I use my Yahoo! email address (Apple ID) to log into my different me.com email account.

So, any update to the rumors in this article from September?

Apple's iCloud runs on Microsoft and Amazon services

I'm also having problems connecting to Apple's iCloud mail server, ugh. I thought this was the simplest building block of all of iCloud.

Certainly not the kind of startup Steve would have liked, but things seem to be settled down now, at least for me.
I can send/receive emails from/to all of my various addys, go daddy, me, mac, att.

Initially, nothing was synching; iCloud was acting like a POP account. Now it's working as an IMAP server should

Same here. Working perfectly for me now.

I'm still going to miss iDisk and (especially) Gallery though.

The loss of the MobileMe Galleries is a bummer. There are other options, although none as easy.

iDisk functionality is available from some web hosting providers via an 'online folder'. Again, not as easy as iDisk but if it's fast, I won't care. iDisk has always been waaaay too slow to be of any use other than storing the occasional small file to share over the Internet.

Agreed. Using dropbox and box.net now. Quite happy with them both. Still can't find a suitable replacement for Gallery though. Flickr doesn't toot my horn and I hate picassa.

I liked mobileme gallery for it's private nature... via obscurity. I could put a sig or funny image up and no one would know unless they had the page. Anything I put on my flickr, is either public or if private, only flickr friends can see it, which means I can't share it.

I may have to revert to Photoshop Gallery export and using -gasp- my own web space.
