Wait 3 people dead is a tragedy? Is it just because it happened here in the US that its a tragedy? Oh wait, your canadian. Is it just because it happened in the "west" that its a tragedy? Surely you're not trying to compare this to 9/11?

This thread went off topic/rails with the letter bombing posts and Dakar's gif.

How many dead would qualify this event?

Monday is our closing day and the cover needed to ship by 7pm. At 4pm the entire staff gathered and it was decided that the Boston Marathon tragedy would be this week's cover. We immediately shelved the existing cover story and began putting together this cover with the reporting and photos that were streaming in. We chose this powerful image of the fallen runner (78 year old Bill Iffrig) and the police in the aftermath of the bombing. It was one of the first images we looked at. If you look at the news footage, you can see the photographer in the lower right hand of the screen as the explosion goes off and the runner falls. We kept the cover lines really simple. The image said it all, you didn't need any other words.

Aren't 100+ people injured? That might be the tragedy part.

I thought the same as well.

There are about a dozen (mostly silly) things I think of when I see that picture, and none of them are even close to what it's representing.

One suspect is dead, and the cops are hunting the other. Apparently, very crazy things happened, like the suspects throwing grenades at the cops from a stolen car, and the suspects even had a hostage at one point.

People in suburbs Newton, Watertown, Waltham, Alston, Brighton are being asked to stay home.

Waltham MA Police Department
Per the Chief of Police and Mayor of Waltham: residents are urged to stay in their locked homes today until the situation is resolved. Businesses are urged to remain closed if possible. Although there is no intelligence that the bombing suspect is in Waltham an abundance of caution is warranted. We will update our followers with more information as we get it.

Apparently currently, he's a suspect, not a dick.

It's up to a court to decide whether he's a dick.

Well his brother, dick #2, is already dead thanks to a shootout and grenade-out with police. I'm going to make a massive leap of faith here and say I am pretty confident this guy can also be classified as a dick.

So for those of you outside the region and/or not glued to CNN: Boston and surrounding town in total and complete lock down. All public transportation aside from airport and limited taxis in downtown shutdown.

NH/Mass. border under full police check points.

Mass. has requested and received full NH State Police SWAT team.

Are any of you in CT or RI and has status in your areas?
What, me worry?

Umass Dartmouth entirely evacuated, the Town of Dartmouth (about 5 minutes fromm me) is a complete shit-show.

Lots of instagramed photos from friends and acquaintances with SWAT teams and Armed National Guard on the hunt. Pretty crazy shit. My National Guard buddy has been very busy since Monday, I can't wait until he gets home to hear his side of all this.

Whether you think someone is a dick, whether they are a dick, and whether a court decides they're a dick are pretty independent of one another.

Non-essential businesses in the surrounding towns were told to shut down and tell their workers to stay home. This means only police, fire, hospitals, and dunkin donuts were open. (I'm not joking.) My work said to work from home, if you could.

We went for a walk with the dog, it was very quiet, only a few people breaking the ban.

The local PD just gave the all clear for us to leave our houses and businesses to open.

The funny thing is, this could have the opposite effect of helping the search. If he's holed up in a home holding a family hostage, people would notice if that family didn't go to work or school today.

I hope he's not doing that.

not technically, but I did feel a little odd, but we weren't THAT close to the action if the guy was on foot... but if he grabbed another car...

The skyline in the background is Boston. Watertown is about even with my son's elbow.

sek, I hope you and you friends and family live nowhere near Watertown. I was listening to some lady on radio talking about shell casings landing in her living room.

Edit: And to andi and the rest of New Englandites I'm unaware of.

If there's one thing that will come out of this, police radio needs to be encrypted. Or better encryption. The entire world is eavesdropping on the police operations net thru the internet. The flood of info is causing problems for even huge websites like Reddit and Fark.

It would be hilarious if we found out the perp was hiding in that boat and monitoring Fark for the latest on his iPhone.

Not directly in Watertown, but many friends in the area.

More unsettling is the three arrests made in New Bedford tonight, which is my home town. Apparently they have suspect #2 swiping his Umass card into the gym on Tuesday, and I can only assume the arrests in New Bedford were some of his college buddies.

Why are police scanners open to the public? | The Verge

They closed them down to the public for a time this afternoon actually. And I doubt he was able to charge his iPhone from the time of the shootout last night to capture today.

Not out the question, New Bedford isn't exactly..... well, it's a place that you can find any number of unsavory characters.

My gut feeling, one of those arrests will be his girlfriend.

Behind Our May Boston Marathon Cover

Then our design director, Brian Struble, and deputy design director, Liz Noftle, came up with the concept of taking shoes worn during the marathon and arranging them so that the negative space is in the shape of a heart.
