The timing is pretty interesting. I wonder if Bush can make a recess appointment immediately, or if he has to propose a candidate and have the Senate vote him or her down before making a recess appointment?

Either way, I predict that there will not be another Attorney General confirmed by the Senate until the next President is in office. Eitehr Bush will make a recess appointment, or Congress will keep voting down his selections and the Acting AG will keep the job until the end of Bush's term.

Michael Chertoff, the current Homeland Security secretary, is the consensus pick to get nominated by Bush. That nomination hearing will be good theater, make sure you have the popcorn ready!

Why is it when Democrats are tanking, or have screwed up, they won't do the right thing and resign to keep from embarrassing their party?

I vote for that is what is going to go down. THEY want to pick the next one. That is if THEY get in next time.

Um, do you not recall that Gonzales is a Republican? You may not remember, but Gonzales perjured himself in front of Congress and still, you probably don't recall, refused to resign.

It will be interesting to see what, if anything, happens from this point. From my understanding, Gonzales was blocking all investigations into the White House.

The democrats still don't understand the Separation of powers and they have no control over the White house, and the political grandstanding is just BS. Witch hunts! They don't remember Clinton refusing to give documents, and the repubs couldn't do anything either. Not clearly remembering something from months/years ago is different than actual lying under oath. When is the last time a Democrat even too their oath seriously?

Probably around the same time a Republican took their oath seriously.

Bush will always have more incompetents lined up. But I think Chertoff has failed badly enough at Homeland Security that he should be moved out. If Bush wants another incompetent AG, then so be it (and perhaps Attorney General will fit Chertoff's skills better, I shouldn't prejudge). Hopefully we'll get someone more professional at Homeland Security; I think that should be a priority.

Why are you trying to change the subject? Gonzales didn't take his oath seriously, and that's the topic of this thread.

Or committing ACTUAL perjury, which Dems forever poo-pooed as nothing. Now it's hilarious to watch them try and whine about perjury as if they had some moral authority about that.

Funny, I also don't recall Janet Reno stepping down after fuxing up worse than any atty. General in history. I don't recall Gonzales barbecuing a compound full of women and children, or storming anyone's home to deport a kid back to a brutal dictatorship.

The selective feigned "outrage" of bitter liberals is a curious thing!
