F**k! so i took my ipod to school today, it;s finals week so we get to listen to music either after or during the test. well after 1 test i look at the headphone jack and its broken! it broke at one of the mysteryous extra contacts where the plastic gets thin. and now im pissed. if apple had released a remote that would fit there it would have never broken. my headphones are the high quality ones that sony makes with the kinda heavy cord and the long plug. so that was what did it but jeez! why make it so weak? Is there a possibility that apple would replace/fix it? I got it for x-mas so i'm within warrantee.
uhhh i'm bummed
P.D.
's are cool lol
Edit: I was pissed last night, so I edited the first word. (i used a ) sorry

PD-
Definitely give Apple Warranty your best shot. Tell 'em what you know they want to hear. I think your chances are good.
I had to call them yesterday, my iPod ear buds crapped out on the right earpiece.
If you get it replaced, pay attention to the size of the plug/adapter combo and the when you use it.
No socket will survive a large plug/adapter with much movement.
If you can't get it replaced/repaired, get a hold of me. I'm near you - I live in Longmont, work in Gunbarrel. If we can find a suitable replacement part, I can do it.

On a lighter note, if you'r iPod was still working... Since you can listen during the test, you could actually cheat, ahem, promote your grade point average by making mp3s with the answers to the questions.

well today was the last final. school got out at 10:55am and now i'm glad it's over. i have a 4 1/2 day weekend ahed of me. and only one teacher let us listen during the test. and anyway the test was over the whole year so i would have a BIG mp3 file. it would only waste my time and i never cheat so, No.
P.D.
P.S. Zac i will e-mail/call apple and see what i can do. are the service calls free? anyway uhh thnx.

PD - I think you'll like the Waterford case. The only problem is I can't see the screen when I use it in the car.
Apple's service rocks - got my replacement ear pods today!
The box was in front of my door when I got home from work.

I sent the message to apple yesterday at like 1:00 and I get the box at 1:00 today and call airborn as it says on the paper that comes with it and they pick it up today! i still have like 15-20 pieces of tape that apple included in the box. it is called "scotch pad" and each piece of tape is like 6 inches long. wow apple service is soo cool i just hope i get it replaced/fixed. all that went wrong was some plastic braking in/around the headphone jack.
I also got my watch back today which I had sent it about a month ago because it got water in it. it was supposed to have a 660 foot water resistance but after goung through the washer it came out full-o-h2o. and this is the 5th time I have done this. I am totally taking the 11 year warrantee to heart. but I love my fossil watch anyway.
P.D.

So what's the status of your pod?
After reading this thread I began inspecting mine and noticed the same broken plastic on the headphone jack. Sure enough I checked the fit on my earbuds and they slip out too easily with almost no resistance.
I just recieved my box from apple and was about to send it in, but was wondering if you have heard anything yet?
School starts today, so I'm hoping that I'll be too busy to notice it's absence. However I must add, thet I have used mine religiously since I recieved it in November. Not a day has passed where I wasn't wearing it on a walk, driving with it in my car, or had it plugged into my stereo.
All in all, if it died tomorrow I would have gotten my money's worth, and would immediately go out and buy two more. One for me and one for my woman who keeps snaking it from me.

so, i got a brand new one today. i was happy i got it back today. the first thing i did was take the plastic "do not steal music" plastic covering and cut out holes for the wheel and the jacks. i will have to wait till my case ships from water field. and school started for me also.
on a side note, I got new classes today and one is "Electronic music" and one of the class requirements is to bring headphones, so i will bring my iPod every day as soon as I have my case. I hope I will have fun.

Apple is the best company on earth, too bad they can't be as snappy with new products. But who else on earth has a support team that replace a product in under 48 hours?!

I'm joining the broken earphone jack club. I really don't know why they break. I've always been careful with it. Mine went back to Apple Thursday.

2002-01-25 14:50:40 Diagnostic - servicing product

So it's being assembled. Looks like very, quick turn around.

Honestly,
I don't think this is a major problem. Even if it happens to you, the iPod functions fine. However the plug is prone to slipping out easily. If you are picky about your toys, or simply want most out of your purchase the go to the apple website and tell them about it.
Apple's repair process was the most painless exchange I've ever had with any type of purchase.
Hell, for this reason alone you should pledge your sole allegiance to the consumer gods that control apple. Better yet, why hasn't this service been made into a commercial spot , and used to educate the wintel masses on how customer support should be handled.

I'm joining the club of the broken headphone jack as well. The plug was just not tight anymore, so I checked the jack, and sure enough, there's a crack in the wall.
Still under warranty, hope they will repair it.

Mine also broke, and I can't get their website to work properly so that I can request service. What phone number can I call?

How long is the warranty?
I bought mine the day they were available at all Apple Stores.
I dropped it twice and now a Waterfield Sooper Dooper case is protecting it. Are they replacing them with NEW iPods?
I love my iPod having my favorite music AND files in one item is sooooo useful.
Hopefully we'll see iPods with bigger storage size, but I'm in NO hurry to get rid of this one.

This is EXACTLY what I feared when these things first came out. I used to go through 2 or 3 walkmans a year due to busted headphone inputs and got sick of buying them for $20 or $25 bucks. This thing is like a $400 walkman...no matter how careful you are they wear down.

I had an equally satisfying experience when the headphone jack went in my pismo (same thing). So I extended the AppleCare! (didn't matter that my warranty was voided thanks to me changing HD and installing ram in bottom slot. They could've kicked up a fuss)
