Just wondering - what difference does that make anyway? Mortals won't get it before 8/24, so why all the excitement?

Stink different.

Isn't there some differences b/w a GM and the final release that is in the box? I thought i heard someone mention that before. Maybe I am smoking crack though.

I can neither confirm nor deny that that is true though.

People often bring up "debug code" but that is all just nonsense. All OS's have some amount of debug code. This does not impact performance. The so-called "checked builds" (which people really mean when they refer to a version with debug code) are not distributed outside of Apple. Said another way, the OS X releases with debug code that slows performance are not distributed outside Apple. None of the releases sent to developers, or posted illicitly on Carracho, are checked builds with debug code.

A recent build was RC1 (release candidate 1). There will likely be at least one more release candidate then the gold master (GM). There may be several builds between RC1 and RC2 (not widely distributed), and between RC2 and GM.

By definition:
GM = Gold Master = version sent to factory for mass duplication. All the retail CDs are burned with the GM image (gold master used to refer to the special gold-coloured CD used as the master image). There are no differences between GM and what you buy at the store.

Cheers!

This wouldn't mean that, say, Apple would send out disks earlier than August 24, would they? Or that at least machines at the Apple Store will have the GM on them soon?

If anyone knows when the Apple Store in Minneapolis has it on their machines... well, let me know

You know what I just noticed? My OS 10.0 CD looks like it was created with a CD burner and then was pressed like a CD-R... I can see the little rings on it and I can't see them on the 10.1 (both discs) or any other CDs I have. Usually the pressing factories are very good at making the entire back of the disc look uniform and one color. (I even get the Semi-Green glare off my 10.0 disc! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> ) My rant is now done. You may go back to the regularly scheduled broadcasting.

I just burnt 3 GM builds for a game and let me tell you the disc was not gold.... They were Viking 700MB

Gold Master was in the old days gold was better quality now it's just a saying.... They could still be gold for a large release but I don't see the point as the "GM" disk I send off was duplicated at least 2000 times each no sweat...

Cheers Edwin

The disc is gold because the master CD in the old days were actually used in the beginning of the CD pressing process (probably still are today?).

Bascially, the pressing of CDs is like the pressing of Records - where you had one master mould of the disc made of metal or silver or something that was actually physically used to press the discs.

Now the Gold CD-ROM sent to the CD pressing house would be used to actually make the Silver/Metalic mould - remember the mould is an INVERTED image of the disc - and this mould is used to recreate the original CD by being pressed into the plastic discs.

Why is the CD Gold? Well if you sent them a plastic CD - it would melt wouldn't it? when trying to create the mould.

Only one - and I mean one of these very expensive CDs is sent out to each pressing house - and many many moulds are made from it, these moulds are used to press hundreds and thousands of plastic CDs.

The plate can be mounted in the mould to reproduce the CD tracks.
Probably to prevent corrosion on the master image some kind of gold stuff is pressed or sprayed on the top layer.
