Hi,
I am going to buy a new iMac when the new versions are in the store. I will get the combo, because I want to get a lightscribe dvd burner. I have my mind set on the LaCie firewire version. however, I saw that I can change the optical drive myself. I prefer an internal drive, but I don't know if slot loading drives are being sold already. Can anybody help me out, or does anybody have a better option than the LaCie?

I'd go with the firewire drive. You'll then have 2 optical drives, really useful if you want to make copies of CDs or DVDs with Toast as you can do a disk to disk rather than make image of the CD/DVD then burn the image to media. Plus if something happens to either drive (assuming not at the same time of course) you'll have a back up optical drive.

First, I'm not sure if there are any slot loading (slim) Litescribe drives, and second the only software I know of for Mac OS X that supports Litescribe comes with the Firewire version of the LaCie drive.

Maybe if lightscribe was faster, in colour, and was more resistant to fading, then the LaCie would be worth what they're asking for it.

Seems like a gimmick to me.
Why not just print onto the media as most printers support it, rather than buy an over priced external drive, and pay over the odds for media to burn monotone images onto!
