So, on Sunday night, at about 1:05am, I popped the question.

I am engaged.

I need to add a new rule for hitting on women, buying them an expensive diamond ring and giving it to them when asking them to marry you is definitely a good move.

Especially if you intend on spending the rest of your life with them.

Congrats.

You'd think diamonds would be cheaper in Africa, but I guess not.

Yeah – the price got worked out in dollars then converted to ZAR.

Weird, because they're mined just up the road. (Well, relatively.)

Congratulations!

Oh, and while the stones are mined near you, they're cut and polished FAR away. Almost all of 'em go through Antwerp, so you can add airfare to the cost of the finished product.

Good pictures of your intended (and the ring) are now required.

Congrats, Calv!

Would you have believed it if eight months ago someone had told you you’d have asked a girl to marry you by summer?

I had no idea Antwerp was a ‘rock capital’. Interesting.

Edit: Such a lovely ring does not deserve to be caught in the same picture as that drab blue fleece.

Actually, not at all. 8 months ago if you had said to me I'd be asking a girl to marry me within the next ten years, I would have not believed you.

That was sort of my hunch.

Queue debate regarding Antwerp, rock capital.
What should I queue it behind.

Very nice. Elegant setting, nice looking rock, tasteful overall execution. Good job. Now how about your intended's face?

Don't have a photo taken in the last 3 days, and I'm kinda reserved to post photos of her on the net.

She really doesn't like it.

Salty: Don't think that I post a Smoldering of Information in the lounge, at least definitely not enough to warrant a blog.

But thanks for the good wishes dude!

Well at least give us your impression. Was she stunned? Gleeful? Excited? Has she stopped grinning yet?

For the record my new blog is called smoldering reformation

And I've never understood why guys on NN would rather read about random news stories involving fire arms and the elderly than hear about what's going on in other people's lives.

I think there's a difference between "chatting" about one's life and providing too much information (either way too much detail, or inappropriate detail). I'm glad for calverson, and feel quite comfortable about discussing the ring, the girl's reaction and such. That's the kind of stuff I think of as appropriate fodder for a party conversation. Intimate details aren't really appropriate, nor is the kind of thing that tends to make people's eyes roll back in their heads when you go on and on about it.

In other words, in responding to a poll (probably by besson!) about which toilet paper you use, it'd be fine to say "Charmin," or even that you're an "over the top" versus "behind the roll" kind of person, but NOT that you have had problems with Northern shredding on parts of your anatomy, nor how you organize your spare roll inventory...

News stories involving firearms and the elderly are things that go on in other people’s lives.
