A friend just got this netbook only a month ago. Very little usage, no drops or compression. Thoughts?

This isn't going to help, but that looks like drops or compression.
My theory would be there was something sitting on or near the trackpad and the display got closed on said item.

Could it have been caused simply by grabbing the netbook with fingers/thumb near the latch, just like we pick up unibody Mac notebooks?

There is another problem with the screen. Besides the crack damage, it is showing the wrong OS icon. This will lead to security problems and a lot of tech support time. In the long run, the incorrect icon will most likely cost more in man-hours than the screen replacement.

There's a bug in Windows that causes LCDs to spontaneously break. I think it's called rage.

I called HP Support (India of course) and they told me that this is generally indicative of accidental damage. I told them it was not and would like to send it to HP for service. They're sending a box, and the customer has to pay postage one way. From there they'll decided if it's warrantied or not.
I told them not to get a netbook.

A carefully handled LCD should last for years and years. It takes physical damage to cause a screen to show that much bad stuff. There are two or three distinct problems here. First is the obvious broken glass IN the screen-it's the LCD layer, not the protective outer glass layer.
Second is the liquid leakage across the top of the screen, which could have been caused by the same force that broke the LCD glass, but is NOT consistent with the visible glass breakage being the actual cause of the leak.
Third is the digital connection problem in the upper left quadrant of the screen. This isn't something you typically see with basic "broken LCD" issues.
More stuff is going on than "your friend broke the machine and wants it replaced for free." I'd be curious to know what sort of tension that LCD is under when it's installed in the netbook's lid. My first idea is that the retaining bracket was overtightened in the middle, and the stress eventually caused the glass to break, along with disrupting the liquid seal at the top of the LCD panel.

I forgot to add that I was on the phone just shy of 60 minutes. (I had to call HP b/c my friend doesn't speak English.)
Contrast that to my last experience with Apple support and a cracked 3GS case near the dock connector: entered problem description into online form, pressed Submit. Two seconds later, site says problem is likely covered. Shipped via UPS at $0 cost. New 3GS returned days later.

HP support is notorious.
I have an acquaintance that worked at HP tech support near here. Many of the support guys were running Macs at home.

My HP business support calls usually last 20 minutes or so - I think it depends on which departments you're talking to.

My observation is that when HP bought Compaq, they lowered themselves to Compaq's level of quality and customer service.
There's a reason Compaq was available to be acquired, by the way, and it wasn't because someone wanted to "sell the business and retire.

No warranty repair, but the LCD repair is only $200 -- more than half the value of the machine.
The owner has decided to cut his losses. I'll post it in Marketplace soon enough, he is asking $250 but you know how that goes.
