I have the possibility of trading in a 1 Ghz Ti and buying a new 17" Al, new AppleCare, new bag, for a difference of $1200. Should I do it? Is the jump up to a faster 17" Al worth the price? As a student, I'd only want to do it if it's worth it. Any helpful comments would be hugely appreciated.

I went from a Ti to a revA PB17. There is no comparison, IMHO -- the PB17 has a much better keyboard, screen, no hinge problem, better airport (extreme) and MUCH better reception.

It IS bigger and heavier -- the same weight as the Pismo -- but that does not personally bother me one bit.

But I agree, what you do with your notebook will determine whether any of these differences matter to you. The TiPB is a pretty good laptop.

i would do it just because the $1200 difference for everything (including $350 applecare) is great. i think you would pay much more for that if you sold your tibook and bought the 17", even educationally. i might be wrong about that, though.

I would also probably take that deal if I had the chance.

I did that, but I went with the 15" AlBook since the 17" is too much of a monster to lug around school. My 15" AlBook so much better than the TiBook. No more crappy hindges or poor airport reception.

As for use of the computer, I don't do any graphic intensive work. That being said, I'm on my computer all the time, either working for classes, surfing the Net, playing games, or otherwise. It's ridiculous the amount of time I spend on this thing.

I know this is a pretty good deal, but with no real reason to leave the Ti, I worry that I'm spending over 1K when I don't really need to. Of course, I will have to spend 2.5K in a year or two when I decide to change notebooks. And then there's the Powerbook G5 question, which of of course no one can answer with any reliability.

Either way I have a great computer, so I can't complain too much. Thanks.

I would sell my Ti for 1300-1400 and buy a new Al with an education discount.

keep in mind that he is getting applecare and a case. i'm not sure that 1300-1400 is reasonable for a 1 ghz tibook, nowadays. afterall, it is 2 generations back.

The price is an average of what I've seen on eBay, plus some software that the buyer wouldn't have to purchase.

I guess you people have never sold anything on eBay. I sold a 1GHZ TiBook 3 months ago for $2100. Here is a 1GHZ TiBook that is currently at $1600 and it has a reserve. If it didn't have a reserve it would be a lot higher.

i would stay with the one you have, it works just fine for what you do, so don't get rid of it.
