I have worked with Canada Forces personnel on a number of occasions. I spent almost a week with a captain from Ottawa, assisting him in building a documentation package that basically encapsulated the entire training protocol for my specialty, arguably the most broad and technically demanding in the entire suite of Air Force electronics maintenance specialties. I've worked with Canadian soldiers and airmen enough to know that Canada Forces share the same basic ideas behind character (the basic moral character lpkmckenna mentioned, as well as the ones I spoke of) as US military forces (and in general the same as UK forces).

And from reading his writings on this subject, I have no doubt that lpkmckenna is indeed a GI, and specifically a Soldier.

You can't expect conscripts to get the same experience that volunteers do. The receptive state of mind that caused them to volunteer in the first place is an important part of the experience. It's another example of the general rule that you can't help someone without their cooperation.

Dude, you need to learn to control your emotions.

It's unfair that so many conversations are hijacked by your uncontrolled emotions.

If Laminar is a clown he's a crappy clown because he doesn't really have any clown tricks, unless he's good at giving kids cotton candy.

While at Target some massive fatty I barely knew wanted to hold my baby, and all I could think about was the Fat Bastard scene from Austin Powers. I told her, "eh, she's not feeling too well, someone tried to mess with her mojo".

If it had been a skinny semi-stranger, would you have allowed her to hold the baby?

Your answer would have worked to fend off any well-meaning stranger but I don't see how someone else's weight affects you here. Just sounds mean.

Asking to hold a baby is a no-no.

I remember I met some old lady who asked for directions. I was walking that way and agreed to show her. She took my daughter's hand and walked a meter behind me and my wife.

The part of the city we were in was swarming with people—imagine a street in the middle of Tokyo. And we lost them!

We spent several crazy, panicky minutes running round thinking, "Oh my God! A crazy lady has taken our daughter."

Then we saw them down a side street laughing together at something in a shop window.

Most horrible few minutes of my life.

Whole Health Source: U.S. Weight, Lifestyle and Diet Trends, 1970- 2007

Between 1970 and 1980, something changed in the U.S. that caused a massive increase in obesity and other health problems. Some combination of factors reached a critical mass that our metabolism could no longer tolerate. The three biggest changes in the American diet since 1970:
An increase in cereal grain consumption, particularly wheat.
An increase in sweetener consumption
The replacement of meat and milk fat with industrial vegetable oils, with total fat intake remaining the same.

Americans aren't fat. Obesity isn't bad for your health just as 2nd hand smoking isn't bad.

Obesity, 2nd hand smoke, and global warming is just a liberal conspiracy perpetuated by the liberal media, so that socialist Nazi Democrats can tell you what to eat, what to drive, and what to smoke.

It's all a freaking conspiracy!

Top 3 greatest lies by the liberal media:
1. Global Warming is man made
2. Obesity is bad for your health
3. 2nd hand smoke causes cancer

Go Texas! Everything is bigger in Texas.

Archived-Articles: Secondhand Smoke, Lung Cancer, and the Global Warming Debate

There ya go. I use both 'Nazi' and 'Liberal Media'.

Heh I was eating a piece of decadent chocolate cake when I clicked on this thread.

So... Really? 10 dozen? I didn't even think that'd be possible, at least for Krispy Kreme donuts. Yuck.

BTW, most studies have shown that those with higher BMI's in general have higher metabolic requirements than those with thinner builds with the same activity level. This "slow metabolism" story rarely is the real factor, unless you have a endocrine disorder or something, like hypothyroidism, or you're talking about reducing your activity when you're 30 because you are at a desk job all day long.

Back in college I could binge on two dozen by myself, ten dozen is a breeze for five professional grazers.

I remember back as a student I went on a day trip somewhere, and brought six donuts with me for snacks. These were sugary and fattening, but much less so than the Krispy Kreme ones. By the fourth one (eaten over two sittings), I wanted no more of them. I couldn't imagine eating all six, much less a single dozen.

Yeah and I used to be scrawny until I shattered my femur and was given way too much sympathy burger king.

Things happen, but either way you should dial back the contempt which you have for people you don't know. It's one thing to say that Americans are gluttonous etc ... which all of you are, even the skinny ones. It's another thing to label all people you call fat, as somehow less valuable. Frankly the fact that anyone even calls someone fat is unfortunate. We don't call women boobs or breats, we don't call athletic people muscles and tendons. When you call someone fat you dehumanize them, you discuss one aspect of them which overrides the rest of their personhood. You talk about them as if all that they are is the level of concentration of lipids in relation to the rest of their mass.

Regardless of how round and unappealing others are, they're still people and they don't deserve to be talked about as if they're exclusively defined by something that they themselves probably don't even like about themselves.

And while you may be quick to dismiss me and say that if they wanted to they could change, you're right and you're wrong. It's within the realm of possibility to change to some degree, there's a good chance that even if they slimmed down you'd find them unattractive. I can almost promise you that they've tried very hard to lose their weight, I can think of almost no person I've ever met who was humiliated for being "fat" who hasn't vowed that they're going to start running, or biking or working out. But you know, it's very easy to get discouraged especially if you don't know what you're doing.

You don't know what's going on in other people's lives. And an unwillingness to care doesn't reflect well on you.

That sounds like something a Nazi would say about Jews. Or a white supremace against Blacks. Prejudice is prejudice regardless of what is currently acceptable and what isn't. Being prejudice against fat people and making jokes about them might be "ok" today. But it was only 60 years ago it was ok to be prejudice and make jokes against Japanese. 100 years ago at disabled people. 150 years ago against blacks. Guess some one needs to start a fat person movement to remind the skinny that fat people are "people" too

I still make jokes about everyone, regardless of race or ethnicity, it doesn't matter. Uptight PC marshmallows who are offended can kiss my ass.

What does matter is the burden that people who are over twice their recommended body weight place upon everyone else. This isn't about race, ethnicity, or people who are genuinely disabled. It's about people who completely lack self control and can't stop shoving food down their throats. Have a thyroid problem? That's understandable. Have some other type of glandular condition that makes their weight a bona fide medical issue? They have my sympathies. Can't stop ramming candy down your pie hole? I find that contemptible. Start exercising and fix it. I offered a close friend of mine $500 for each pound he could lose and keep off for a year, at the time he tipped the scales at over 350lbs. He actually ended up owing me money.

A person can't change their race, but they sure as hell can stop consuming 5k calories every day.
