Hi,
I about to buy the 2.16Ghz MBP and was thinking if I should just get the 2GB Ram upgrade for $175 or just buy ram for else where. I've seen other site sell 1GB for $80-90. What apple is charging for the upgrade is pretty steep so I don't know if it's worth it... Any suggestion on what brand I should be lookin at to match the ram the MBP has?
Thanks

I recommend Crucial; pick your MacBook Pro from the dropdown here.
$66 to add 1GB (for a total of 2GB) or $355 to add 2GB (for a total of 3GB).

I am a fan of Crucial as well. I'd stay away from anything Kingston based on some friends' experiences.

I'll put in a vote for OWC. I've bought lots from them and never had a problem.

OWC is generally (and sometimes extremely) overpriced compared to NewEgg... and I can't say I've heard anything first-hand bad about NewEgg's service. If you buy the wrong product that's your fault, and NewEgg has a great return policy.

I've tried OWC, Kingston, and Crucial. Crucial is the only RAM that has ever worked for me, everything else got sent back. YMMV.

A year ago, I settled on OWC for my RAM upgrade. Just to be safe, I asked everyone if they thought it was reliable in this post. (Although a year old, I definitely recommend you read the comments there.) I'm happy to say that it has been extremely reliable.
If you're not so interested in reliability and would rather spend the least amount of money possible, check out dealnews.com/memory. That's the site that led me to OWC in the first place. MacNN just confirmed it would work right.
Never buy your RAM from Apple if you can help it. It justs costs too much.

I have been an admitted Crucial fanboy for almost a decade...but TBH, when I decide to buy a 2GB stick soon, I'll probably order from OWC... All the long-time Mac users seem to swear by OWC (I switched only 6 weeks ago), and Crucial is ~$150USD more than OWC rwhen I checked last night...

wow, being new to all thinkgs mac, I never realized how big a savings getting ram from OWC instead of apple would be.
Will definitely have to think about ordering from OWC once i get my imac. apple charges $900CDN for 3gb for the 24" imac. OWC charges $287US.
its worth getting the basic 1gb from apple and junking the 2 512mb modules and ordering all the ram from owc.
Does updating RAM invalidate the warranty on a mac ?

No Dazed, upgrading the RAM yourself doesn't void your warranty.
