Is Apple in the process of optimizing all its software, and recommending developers to do the same?

All current Apple software is retina-optimized.

Of course, non-Retina displays are being phased out and UI tweaks are made with Retina screens in mind. Replacing the system font with a variant of Helvetica Neue is such a decision, and the font is harder to read on non-Retina displays than Lucida Grande it replaced.

That's what I thought. I was wondering because the 2014 2.5K iMac screen is all I need. I am not a professional. However I plan to keep the iMac for awhile so it would make sense to future proof by going with the 5K.
