I give it 4/5, Lena Headey made the movie (though I did love Urban's portrayal of Dredd, as well). It was a tightly-made action/sci-fi that didn't try to expand beyond its roots and was all the better for it. Primo dystopian fare.

She was excellent. Urban had the proper frown. Perhaps against my better judgement, I liked the rookie.

That said, and I know these aren't the most fair things to say...

1) It felt too comic book-y (I know... what was I expecting).
2) I'm going to compare it to Robocop, and feel it was more than a star below it.

Also, Mega City 1 felt... empty.

Is that the way things were in the comic? I imagined things being overcrowded.

Precisely how things were. Overcrowded to the extreme, yet almost entirely soulless and "empty". It's a meat grinder to feed the rest of the other cities, quite literally.

In the comics the city was much denser. There was roads and monorails on multiple levels running between the blocks which were much closer together.
They got the blocks about right though, each one is a city in itself with residents having no real requirement to leave. Schools, hospitals, shops and parks were contained within each block.

I suspect the more sparse layout in the film was a money saving exercise but I didn't have a problem with it tbh. The much maligned Stallone version had a Mega City that more closely resembled the comics, though they did away with the roads above ground level and had flying vehicles instead.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

As far as the spacing of the blocks go, I read somewhere they tried to put them close together, but that lost the sense of scale.

Finished the DIESEL TIME trilogy.

Riddick wasn't horrible or anything, and I guess it was tighter by virtue of being smaller, but the writing was still pretty loosey-goosey.

Also, while I appreciate getting to see Starbuck boob, it was pretty gratuitous.

The puppy was probably the best part of the movie.

Because of the excitement here, I took a chance on Dredd. I have to say that it exceeded my expectations. 3.5/5 - good performances from the three main actors and a story that was nice and tight without the excessive worldbuilding that is so common in SF movies these days.

I actually think the reverse is true. There is too much open space. The city in the comics is quite claustrophobic with a darkness at ground level even during the day. The last movie didn't have that feel but it didn't matter so much as most of it was inside one block.

Its a great comic adaptation precisely because it didn't try to squeeze 40 years of detailed lore into a 90 minute movie.
If it had been me I would have used an old comic story called The Graveyard Shift as basis for the plot. It follows Dredd on a typical night of crime fighting which includes muggings, random raids, gang wars, block wars and a serial killer nicknamed 'Lefty' with a mining disintegrator who leaves only the victims left hands behind and is trying to break the record for most murders in one night.
Its a great showcase for the city, the judges, the crime, the black humour and the extreme violence.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Maybe I didn't explain this well (or I did well enough and you disagree).

They were saying that if the blocks were too close, they didn't seem tall anymore, because there was nothing else to compare it to.

Makes sense I suppose. Though I'd think you could remedy that with a few long vertical panning shots.

Saw John Carter.

It was... okay. I liked the puppy. Not sure if the lead was the right casting choice.

Not that he was bad or anything, but I can't see Dominic West as anything other than McNulty.

Perhaps ironically, I think this is the first Mars movie which ever had a different gravity thing going on.

My commie neighbor is in deep shit over downloading movies. He was given one chance to clean up his act or he's facing >$200k in fines. I'm just glad he's not directly attached to my network anymore (I disconnected him because he was torrenting movies non-stop and using >100GB of bandwidth each day), I don't need the hassle.

My biggest foray into torrenting was after WotC/Hasbro took all the D&D PDFs offline. Found an archive with everything. All of it.

The moment they reversed the policy I dumped the archive and started getting legit copies. I've spent an unseemly amount of money on them at this point.

Build it, and they will come.

You should see my AD&D library, I have just about everything TSR & WotC ever published, back to Chainmail. Takes up 3 60" shelves, 2 large filing cabinets, and 6 big storage totes. Of course, I have all that on an iPad now, with tons of room to spare, but I prefer the books.

I prefer books as well.

I was building up a library, but needing space for work won out. Most of it ended up in storage.

It didn't all go.

I haven't. It's hard to pry me away from skirmish level games.

I picked it up more for its "archeological" value.

I recommend the old film "Faust" 1926. A man sells his soul to the devil, essentially.

TCM had a documentary on early German films titled "Caligari to Hitler" which delved into the screwed up mindset of the German people during the early 20th century. Creepy good films on the whole, but what a horrible time to be alive.

A good, schlocky, horror comedy which Dakar may be able to handle is Dolls.

People get trapped at a dollmakers house during a storm, and the creepy porcelain dolls start killing everyone.

The best part is when a doll's head gets smashed, turns out they have tiny doll skulls inside.

iTunes isn't the only place that streams it. You can rent the movie on YouTube, Amazon Video, Google Play & Vudu

Subego, have you watched GOTG yet?

Anyways. This week, I have mostly been watching the Child's Play films, because I'd never seen any of them. Now I have, 1-6.

1. Good.
2. Nearly as good, better ending.
3. Meh, spent the first part of the film trying to think where I'd seen 'Andy' before because he was different to the first two films. Turns out he was Jimmy Olsen in Lois & Clark.
Bride. Different to before with the jokes, really liked it.
Seed. Mental, OTT, still liked it.
Curse. Back to basics good old creepy doll stuff, the funny stuff had gone as far as it could go with Seed.

So, now what? I'm thinking maybe Evil Dead, so I can move on to the Ash vs series.

One condition. No surgical stuff, scalpels, needles, cutting. It gets to me. I tried to watch Dexter once, first episode, first series, I lasted 15-20 minutes before turning it off, having the guy strapped down to the table with the needles and knives got me really queasy, similar scene in Law Abiding Citizen did the same.

Fine with guns, aliens, zombies. Not interested in Saw films or similar.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

And I think I may have mentioned, when it comes to Evil Dead, don't bother with Evil Dead.

Evil Dead 2 isn't a sequel to the first, it's a remake benefiting from what was learned making the first movie, along with having a far less restricted budget.

It Follows is the best horror movie of recent, almost always the little indie horror movies end up being the best because good horror relies on pacing and subtlety.

There is also the modern trend of having the trailer and the poster spoil the entire movie that makes big budget horror utterly pointless.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.
