Hi.
From experience with a last-gen Powerbook, I noticed that both the FW400 and FW800 ports illogically shared the same bus, and that if a FW400 device was connected to the FW400 port, any FW800 device connected to the FW800 port would suffer, and its thru-put would be pulled down to the lower speed (FW400).
I was just wondering, does the MacBook Pro suffer the same fate? Or, have Apple provided two independent FireWire buses this time 'round?
Thanks for any insight you can give.

Apple's Page on Firewire Implementations
They both use the same controller, but it's designed to handle both protocols at once. I don't see why FW800 would suffer a lower speed, unless there's a design flaw.

FW800 suffers FW400 speeds when used simultaneously with a FW400 device on the Powerbook.
I was hoping that Apple would have addressed this, but I guess they haven't?
Thanks,

Quite disappointing, really. But, it's still a great product, never-the-less!
Thanks,

wait what? is that true? I can see no difference when I unplug my iPod from the FW400 port when I transfer some video files to my FW800 external HD.

When both devices are connected, open the System Profiler, and select FireWire. You should notice (more specifically on the details listed for your FW800 drive) that it says that the bus is capable of up to 800Mb/s, but that it is currently only connected at 400Mb/s.

It seems I had a bad Logic Board in my Powerbook. A replacement resolved the problem!
Well, that's good news not just for me, but for all of us!
Thanks,
onlyone-jc.
