Well, of course they're going to announce SOMETHING tomorrow during the keynote, whether or not new PowerBooks happen to be among the line-up.

It only makes sense that they would wait to update the main page until after the keynote, so they can put up there whatever it is that's trotted out.

My take on the specs that it'll have tomorrow ->

Aluminum Enclosure (The Al15)
1 - 1.25 GHz G5
512 - 1 GB DDR RAM
40 - 60 GB HD (probably 5200 RPM)
64 MB ATI Radeon 9600
AirPort Extreme
Firewire 800
Backlit Keyboard

SURE, it might not be ture, but that'd be a screaming machine. I'm buying it whatever it is.

G5, like what's in the Power Macs. I think it's completely possible. But then again, I'm a blonde Pollack, so take my words with a large grain of salt.

It would not much of an upgrade to go from a 1 GHz G4 to a 1 GHz G5.

A 1.25 G5 is possible (although unlikely).

Well I have no confirmation of spec's, but I do know we will see a new 15" at Paris in a new enclosure.

My own prediction will be a refresh on the whole line.

Also iBooks in December.

I personally promise to eat an entire jar a mayonnaise if there's a G5 in the Powerbook. Don't you guys see this - there is absolutely no chance. None. Zero. There is truly no chance whatsoever.
It's the devil's way now.

I'm not so brave. I don't at all believe there's going to be G5, but from a technical standpoint, it's actually feasible to put a 1.2 GHz G5 in a PowerBook. Mind you mayonnaise does taste good though...

Anyways, I'm not going to bother staying up for the MacNN PowerBook forum post-fest during the keynote. I'll just sleep though it.

At some point I remember one of the Apple execs actually saying in an interview somewhere that they had no plans to put a G5 in a powerbook ANYTIME soon-- they are just too hot. Anyone else remember seeing this?

I tend to think that a even a 1 GHz G5 (500 MHz Front Side Bus) would be a huge improvement over a G4 (stuck on a 133 - 167 MHz System Bus.

Regarding heat, as many have pointed out, a 1 GHz to 1.25 GHz G5 will be cooler than the current G4's. IBM designed this processor with portables in mind. Heat shouldn't be an issue up to 1.25 GHz, and that's on the current chip fab.

It is entirely possible that Apple will release a G5 PowerBook this week, and if not now, then soon. That Apple exec's remark about not seeing a G5 in a PowerBook soon was a long time ago (in computer product cycles).

Even if they do only go to 1.25 ghz the vast majority of buyers won't be going from 1 gig to 1.25, so the performance gain would be huge.

Even someone going from a relatively new 867 to a 1.25 would see a 50% imporvement in clock speed
15" Macbook Pro 1.83 2 GB RAM
Blackbook 13.3 Powerhouse 2 GB RAM
MacMini Dual Core 2 GB RAM (Sadly running Windows Most of the time)
Numerouse Workstations running windows and Linux. Sorry don't have the specs, I don't pay much attention to them anymore. :)

Curious, no L3 cache. I guess they figure the 512 KB L2 is enough, and they needed to cut costs.

The benches should prove interesting.

Curiously the apple web pages for the UK and France both state that there is 1 M L3.. but the US and Australia say nothing.. what does this mean. If there is no L3.. does that mean that the processor is the 7447?

What a beautiful machine. I think I will purchase it when the new operating system is completed and is shipping with new systems.
