Has anyone tried to plug an FM transmitter into their iBook (instead of an iPod)? The Griffin tech guys succintly told me, "No" when I asked if it were possible. However, the physical port (1/8" stereo jack) is the same.
Does anyone know about whether this would work? I tried googling it, of course, and came up with conflicting reports.

I don't see how it could work since the little part that goes into the remote port on top of the iPod would make it impossible to plug fully into the iBook's headphone jack.

I don't think the iTrip would work either. It gets it's power from the iPod to operate (I would imagine through the part that plugs into the remote port) and wouldn't get power through the headphone jack on the iBook.
Any self powered (uses batteries) FM transmitter would work though. I've used the iRock and others with my iBook in the past.

For the price of an iTrip, which really has a pretty lousy range, you're 1/4 of the way to an Airport Express, which works a treat.

I've used an iRock with my iBook in the past, but I found that the sound quality was WAY below that of the iTrip.

thanks for the responses guys. I didn't realize the connections were distinct (I don't have an ipod). Sounds like if I want to accomplish it, the iRock will be the way to go.
cheers,

Might I suggest the FM transmitter that NewerTech makes - it's far higher-powered than any other transmitter. I had much better luck with it than the other ones I've tried. Better sound quality, no static/interference etc.

The original iTrip, the one with the connector around the headphone jack will work with some models of iBook as Apple used the same headphone socket on the iBook and 1st/2nd gen iPods. However, this is just from a vague memory but I'm fairly sure it's true.
