OSX Function-keys on non-Apple keyboards

I'm looking at getting a Mac mini in the near future, and would like to know if/how the Apple-specific keys would be mapped to a general keyboard. Is it changed automagically when a non-Apple keyboard is detected, or do you manually remap functions like sound, eject and contrast?
