Gosh... what you need is a cable that converts the round serial connection on the Powerbook to the 9 pin serial port on the PC. And then you need a null-modem adaptor, either built into the cable or as a separate unit.
Then, you need to get them talking. You might be able to set up direct PPP links over the serial port, but my memory of all that old software is fuzzy.
Your best bet might be to beg, borrow, or steal a PCMCIA ethernet card that will work with the 5300. Then you can put the laptop on the network just like any other Mac and move files that way.

You can make your own RS-232 serial cable to connect your Mac directly to your PC, and then use a terminal program to Zmodem files back and forth between the computers.
Here's how to build the RS-232 cable:
PC (DB-9).................Mac (DIN-8)
1*
2-------------------->3
3-------------------->5
4-------------------->7
5-------------------->4 & 8
6*
7-------------------->1
8*------------------->2
9
*Connect pins 1, 6, & 8 together.
Don't forget to solder the ground shield wire to the metal casing of both connectors.
Note: the DIN-8 should be male, the DB-9 should be female.

By the way, how do i change the creator and type of files? Files come through zmodem as TEXT.

It's been awhile since I've used Zmodem, but I think there is an option to transfer files as source instead of text.
