You better take those racing stripes off before the stripe police come after you and start hissing and honking.

A RX-7 was my first car .... in Gran Turisimo... I have never seen one here in Belgium but always liked the big-engine small car look, don't they use one these in the Fast & the Furious ? ....

Yes, a very nicely handling car when the going gets slippery. The only thing we didn't like was the automatic transmission shifter (protective details never use manual - too easy to stall). With the Audi 80 and I think the 100, you had to be completely stopped before you could throw it in reverse. Stopping like that made J-turns a bit hesitant, which would be a bad thing if people really had been shooting at us.

On the Mercedes and the BMW you can drop it in reverse just before the car comes to a complete halt. Then you can slam on the gas to go backwards for your J turn. Of course, I wouldn't do that to my Merc!

BTW, guess whose Mercedes we practiced on. It was one of Helmut Schmidt's old armored ones from when he was Chancellor. It was pretty ragged out by the time I drove it, though, and on the second day of school we killed the brakes. Then we just had to use the ordinary S Class.

Well, all else aside...

My father-in-law had to change a head gasket on his '94 Mustang recently; he has used nothing in it but Mobil One since it was new. It was the missus' and her sister's car when they were younger, and they were not kind to it. But when he got it apart, he could wipe off the inside of the engine with a paper towel and it looked clean enough to eat off of. Now that's an endorsement for synthetics.

Oh, and I drive a '99 Mustang coupe. 190 HP V6 / 5 speed / crappy shifter that missed third all the time and will soon be sacked in favor of a Steeda Tri-Ax. I just got free fog lamps for it, so I get to visit the junkyard to find a switch and harness for them. Ford ain't gettin' $40 for them without a look for almost free ones first...

I was up in Dearborn yesterday at the last day of the Ford 100 year celebration. Saw a Jaguar XKR. Anyone have $87,000 they can lend me?

I had a 1981 BMW 320iS with a 180,000 miles on it.

I redid the head gasket, milled the head, and replaced two valves.

It was also clean enough to eat off of, and had only used fossil oils.

It's my understanding that in the late 80's, the US gov't mandated that every car have a "passive restraint system."

Automatic seatbelts were the cheapest, so that's what pretty much all the companies put in. Then it turned out that people hated them, and that they were not effective. So in the early 90's the law was amended to require an airbag on the driver side. (Only in the mid-90's did passenger-side airbages become mandatory.)

First-generation airbags suffered from excessive strength due to the fact that they still fell under the original "passive restraint system" rule of it having to restrain a large male who isn't wearing his seatbelt!!! This is contrary to airbags' design, namely, of complementing the seatbelt, not replacing it.

More recently, the rules have been brought more in line with reality, allowing airbag disabling switches, reduced-power airbags, etc.

LOL bummer dude, an "ordinary S class", you just made me laugh out loud in the middle of math class

Btw, only sissies use automatic transmission, I love to drive stick. I agree that in your case, AT is probably way better but still, you know what I mean
How'd you kill the brakes anyway?

PS: Schroeder still uses some of Schmidt's old armored vehicles, most of'em Mercedes. These cars will probably never brake down, better than any Russian tank ever built

An S4 has always been sort of a dream car for me. Refined, fast, luxury car.

I'd rather get an SRT-4 instead of an STi. I don't really even consider an STi in the same class as an S4.

What radar detector do you have? I've been toying with the idea of getting one, as I'll be moving to the sticks (moreso) soon and I doubt the cops will have that instant-on ladar crap like the fuzz near Indy, so I'll stand a chance with a detector.

And vmarks - how often did you change the oil in that BMW? I'm just curious...

Fuzzbuster. It's saved my ass a few times, and sometimes not.

The range is messed up. The 'gods' at subaru decided to coat my windshield with titanium for some reason, and it limits radar detectors, GPS, and you just plain can't use that 'iPass' autopay tollbooth thing on an SVX.

the new S4s look awesome - v8 in a car that size, and the engine weighs the same as the v6 turbo it's replacing...

A goddamn volvo 340, I got it from an old lady with very few miles on it (24.500 kilometres for a car from 1991). And I hate every bolt of it !!
look at these specs :

Fuelconsumption : 1 litre every 10 km
top speed : 110 km/h
accelleration : 0-60 17 seconds

I want a towboat, so I can tow this freakin brick into the ocean

EVERY car is better than tis one !!

Thanks.

Actually, this pic was taken by the seller in his garage (for his ebay auction). It was one of the reasons I bought it used. I could tell he was meticulous about things. I looked at the car last Sat. and his garage was cleaner than my house. (However I'd like to see his garage that clean with 2 kids running around). This guy was so compulsive about cleaning, he cleans the underside of all his cars! Literally gets on his back, crawls under, and wipes them down.

Sadly, my garage is nowhere this clean...

Living in Stuttgart mandates driving either a Porsche or Mercedes. Since my student budget is not big enough for a Porsche, a '96 C280 must do. Hmm.. on second thought I'd rather have a bigger Mercedes than a Porsche anyway

I didn't like it when I saw it in the pictures on ebay. It looks better in person. You really don't even notice it. I probably would not have done this mod (especially since that little lip costs $1600), but since it was part of the car, I left it on.

Ricing up a nice BMW isn't that cool. You should just sell it and buy some Dinan parts instead.

I hadn't thought about that. The Ultimate Mowing Macine!

Actually, I don't think it's "riced". Like I said, it looks better in person. And since I have no mechanical inclination, I won't be taking anything off the car.

For now, I'm detailing cars for gas money. It's a noble profession, and Meguiar's products never fail to impress me, no matter what they're being applied on.

Mechanical inclination isn't really necessary to own a performance car. Performance cars handle better, accelerate faster, and are generally more eye-catching than sedans or trucks. These are some of the reasons why executives and celebrities purchase exotics from companies like Koenigsegg, Ferrari, and Lamborghini. Many compete in rallies such as the Gumball 3000.

I would have bought a 330Ci or a 330i, but I enjoy going fast on the track. While I do consider myself fairly mechanically inclined, no real mechanical inclination is necessary for casual track use. A basic understanding of physics to understand why cars act the way they do under certain forces is useful, though.
