I have an early 15" MBP Core Duo, but have recently noticed that only the fan on the right hand side of the unit seems to be running - if I use various different fan-speed checking tools, fan 1 shows 0 RPM and if I put my ear to the keyboard, I can hear the right fan in operation, but not the left fan.

So my question is: under normal operation, should both fans be running, or is it possible that the left fan has failed?

thanks,

Andy

That has been reported before.

Your left fan is likely broken - both run at 1000 rpm even when the MBP idles. Run the Apple Hardware Test (boot from the install DVD and hold 'd'). If AHT gives you an error code call Apple and give them the error code. They will do warranty repair.

Hi Simon,

Thanks for your help. I ran AHT and it came back with the following error:

4MOT/1/40000002: Left_Upper-Front

Looks like it is going in for repair then

While it's in there, I'll get them to look at:

- the classic MacBook Pro whine
- the wonky DVI connector (thumbscrews can't be screwed in)
- the DVD drive which doesn't always eject
- the uneven display backlight

Given that they are probably going to have to replace the logic board, DVD drive and screen to fix these problems, I'm hoping they will do the sensible thing and give me a new one. Something is telling me that isn't likely to happen however!

thanks again,

Andy

Yep. Fan's kicked the bucket. Lots of MBP have had fan issues.

Good luck with the warranty repair.
