I don't see why you'd even question your decision, honestly. I think you sold yourself a little short in your first post about all the reasons for your pick. It seems there was other criteria that made your decision easier: all other things being equal, a better sense of humor and a personality that fits more with your company would definitely be enough to swing a decision. Hadn't missed a day in over 10 years? That's a pretty good indicator of an amazing work ethic. (If anything, you might have the opposite problem with such a person- you may need to let them know it's okay, even healthy, to take a break now and then.)
Race shouldn't even enter into these things, but it's a little sad to me that it seems to anyway. (In general, not specifically in this case).
