Open the CDs & DVDs preference pane to select what should happen when a blank CD is inserted.

It is set up to launch itunes on inserting a blank cd, but that still dose not explain why it fails to show in finder, or the desktop, or itunes.

I tried i PRAM reset to no avail. think its time for my 3rd SD in just over a year?

If you have it set to launch iTunes, that's all it does. It expects you then to burn a playlist. If you were to quit iTunes without burning a playlist, you'd probably then get the standard message about mounting on the desktop or ignoring. If this is not the behavior you want, change it in the preferences.
