can't really, but...

•mute your speakers before shutdown.

•put a plug in the headphone jack.

•look on versiontracker, there's a shareware app (anybody?) that can mute it...

as annoying as it is, it's there to let you know "all is well" on startup...

It's a question of not waking folks up when I get out of bed early. Will look for the application tomorrow.... [unless some knows where it is!]

If you mute your sound before shutting down the sound will not play. Alternatively, consider just using sleep. No startup gong if you're already started.

Amongst its many features, TinkerTool System v1.6 (Shareware, €7.00) has a setting/option to "Mute The Startup Chime".

Thanks for the help - installed and working just fine - and silently.

The wife will be very grateful!

Haha, nothing worse than having that thing go off in the middle of class (sometimes mid-class I switch between Windows and OS X, hence the reboot). This could be very useful!
