That's true. When I read last week here that they registered Pod it looks like they are going to get rid of all the i's from their products. Maybe it will look like this

Pod
Mac (then model number)
Mac mini
Mac Pro
MacBook
MacBook Pro

Same with the apps

I've always thought it was silly to be using iTunes as an organizer app for movies. I would have much preferred a separate iFlicks. Thing is though it's better for PC users to just have one app for them to download.

But it's quite irritating to have to download iTunes+Quicktime all over again every time an update's released.

There's no way they're dropping the iTunes name now that it's become a household brand. A change from Music to Media Store is more likely imo. Kinda like how DVD became Digital Versatile Disc

It was always Digital Versatile Disc. It's only lay people who think the V stands for video.

I can't see movies being kept in an app called "iTunes" forever. I will agree with gossip that Front Row will take over in some form and become THE media center app......

Perhaps, but everything on your list there represents a dying or dead technology that no one was willing to let go of. The floppy had been replace by Zip disks, PPC had not been (clockspeed) head to head with x86 for a long time, Newton had been replaced by Palm, Was anyone still using classic? (I know... someone was.) Copland was practically vaporware.

The iPod on the other hand is the most popular, most successful, and most well-known brand name for any music player ever. I don't doubt that the iPod has outrun the name Walkman...

Sweeping changes occur when someone realizes that the necessity that no-one else does. In the case of Apple's changes, This has been Steve Jobs for the past (almost) 10 years.

I know man but we're talking about iTunes not iPod. It's a dying name if loads of movies are going to appear in it. Apple could install a new Front Row with an organiser on Macs and Windows and BOOM its a big new brand name. Did you like my Steve Jobs impersonation?

If you think about it it makes sense. The remote is for Front Row. What if Jobs decides BOOM to make the remote better so people can order movies in Front Row like TV on demand? BOOOOOM

Ever seen the front row of a movie theater? It's usually empty. The only time people seem to sit there is when there are no other seats in the house.

There's no way iTunes or iPod are going anywhere. There is just too much name recognition to risk, especially with the iPod. I have to agree iTMS will turn into the iTunes Media Store.

Here here. iTunes & iPod are practically known by everyone in 1st world countries. Heck, even my 86 year old aunt, who can barely use a TV, knows what iPod & iTunes are!

If Apple changed either the iTunes of iPod name, they are making a serious mistake.

Mac Media Center. Yep Apple is going to make that and tell Windows iPod users to come on over to the party. We got Bootcamp if they need their old shiz.

I agree with the comments here that the iPod name is here to stay (most likely Apple registed "pod" just to prevent other companies from using it and leeching off the brand name), but that Front Row is likely going to be an overall media replacement for iTunes at some point in the next couple of years.

Now that Apple are aiming for the corporate market, they could take a leaf from the Microsoft playbook, and get rid of the silly snappytitles, and go with something with gravitas, like the "Apple Home Entertainment, Including Music And TV And Movies And Miscellaneous Video (And Anything Else That We Think Of) Store" to provide content that will be played using the "Apple Home Entertainment, Including Music And TV And Movies And Miscellaneous Video (And Anything Else That We Think Of) Player".

Or maybe not.

I can see that. Jobsy being in Disney now and the way they're doing the movie thing Apple could even go and make a Front Row HD television channel when they get big enough to do that.

Didn't Sony become the massive movie studio, gadget maker and music company conglomerate off the success of Walkmans? Now Apple is doing it because of iPods

I don't think it will be iTunes Media Store. The word "Media" has been claimed too much by Microsoft. Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center.

My bets are on "iTunes Store"

It could just be iTune. That would make a lot of sense, since it includes movies and music. TuneIn also sounds kinda good.

I never said it sounded good. Hopefully it won't be iTune, because it does sound bad. I think iShow would be what it would be called. Nothing with Media though, to Microsoftish.

Geesh, iShow is even worse.

My bets are on Apple Media Store (AMS). I don't know why people here think it sounds Microsoftish.
The MS Media Store doesn't exist yet, only in rumors. So Apple would be first in branding that particular Media + Store combination.

So what ?

A Microsoft Media Store doesn't exist (yet).

And unfortunately, there is no real good substitution for the word media. That's all there is. Downside of a simple language like English.

The article didn't say that Apple really considers a name change at all. Frankly it won't happen. iTunes is far to well established as a brand name for that ever to happen. Same with iMac which is why it's still iMac and not simply Mac.

iPod will stay iPod and iTunes will stay iTunes. The most radical change they will do is drop the Music of the store name.

In retrospect that's what the article says but we became sheep and misinterpreted it (partly my fault) from the title

Back to the start! The rumor is iTunes Music Store will change and Front Row will become more important after a LONG time.

FOR WINDOWS TOO
In fact, the original initialism was for "Digital Video Disk" when Sony and Phillips began the effort to establish a new digital medium in 1994. Later, Toshiba and Warner Home Entertainment announced their own, similar project. In an amazing bit of intelligence, the two partnerships figured out that the market was not interested in sorting things out for developers as had happened with Beta versus VHS, so they formed a consortium called the DVD Forum. Toshiba wished to express the fact that the medium could store more than just video, so they agreed to disagree and compromised on Digital Versatile Disk in most contexts.

My personal impression when this happened was that the Forum did not have usable applications for anything other than video until after they'd gotten things started, so when other applications finally were realized, they wanted to recharacterize the capabilities of the medium.

Here's some interesting reading on the subject, including sources from the contemporary press discussing the name issue.

Thanks, most of us know that I think. What I meant is post release not when they were planning the format. If you ask a lot of lay people they think the V is for video.

Once actual products started hitting the market, the lay person only saw the video application. It was quite some time before affordable, realistic DVD recorders were available (I remember reading about one of the first, which cost something like $5000 and wrote at some stupidly slow-from our perspective-speed), so the "video" meaning was reinforced for a long time, whether it was the intended meaning or not.

Anyway, back to the iTunes name issue...
