I have been asked to provide a snippet of a song that someone has in M4A format—basically a distinctive, musical "bump" from the piece. What's a good, FREE app that will let me do this?

Not free, but probably on your Mac already is Garageband. You will want to look at the commands Edit->Split Track and Track->Fade out.

I do have Garageband, but I can't figure out how to open an MP3 or M4A track with it, so I asked about an app here. Any advice?

You can drag any iTunes song into the GarageBand window and edit it there, if I recall correctly.

OK, that worked. I had to have a project open first, and then drag the song into the project. Thanks!

Audacity will also do this.

I'll also look at Audacity, but I have at least found a way to mess with this track. Thanks for the help!

You could also use iTunes and just set the start/stop times in the song's get info window.
