What am I missing? I used HDMI and my TV supports up to 1080i. It shows 1080i when I am using upscale DVD player. Do I need anything? BTW, I am already using the Blu ray DVD's for gaming( like Resistance )and movies.
Thanks

The PS3 does not output 1080i, only 1080p, and if there's no 720p mode available, it defaults to 480p.
Yes, it sucks.

Oh No! I thought it can default to 1080i. Does the xbox 360 do this? I can still return the PS 3 and wait for the elite. Is this a good idea?
Thanks again.

The PS3 outputs 480i/p 720p 1080i/p. Set the video mode to 1080i in the Video Settings.

Thank you. I found it. And it worked.

There is some truth to what he is saying.
Certain PS3 games DO NOT support 1080i. If your TV is incapable of converting 720p to 1080i, it will down-convert to 480p.
Resistance: Fall of Man is one of those games, unfortunately.

yes it's true. Mine is now set to 1080i but when I play Resistance , it will always be "downgraded" to to 720p.

Yep. I have one of those TVs that do not accept 720p inputs, just 1080i. Resistance would be at 480p on my TV. Lame.

But that would be a TV specific issue would it not?

yes, but one that should have been taken into consideration by $ony when they chose to design a mammoth next-gen console. poor scaling ability is inexcusible in a modern HD console, it's not like it's hard

Kinda like people trying to save a buck buying a TV with half-ass specs for HD? I see two parties to blame in this one.

haven't you ever heard of early adopters?
they're the ones who lose out most in this... (i have no problem, i've got a 720p TV).
sony would be stupid NOT to update this via software update. the kind of people who were early adopters of HDTV are also the kind of people who are early adopters of new, expensive consoles. in my mind there's no excuse for a 1080p console not being able to put out 1080i as well. like i said, it's not hard.

Save a buck? The TV was $3000, and amongst the top of its class. 1080i was the dominant standard at the time, and still is. Basically all consumer HD sources output 1080i... until the PS3 came along.
The ironic part is that some Sony HD TVs also have the same issue. Sony just decided to forget about these people, because Sony cheaped out and wouldn't put a proper scaler in the PS3.

Yes, all Xbox 360s include a built-in scaler. It's a pretty good quality one too.

hmm im not sure about that.. i would have thought 720p would be the current standard, being the native res of the vast majority of HDTVs?

No. HDTV is defined for a range of resolutions not 1. A log of broadcasts are outputting out at 720p and up-converted by the cable/sat box, I believe. I know FOX and ABC broadcast at 720p. Either way an HDTV should be one that supports all HD resolutions UP TO 1080i. The only optional resolution is 1080p, but if you have HD-DVD/Bluray you can justify that option.
I do agree the PS3 should support it but at the same time your set has a sub par label as HD. Why would anyone buy a HDTV for $3000 that does one resolution?

Because all mainstream consumer HD output devices could scale to 1080i... until the PS3. Lack of 720p support in TVs was quite common at the time, and yes with many of the large name brands, including Sony.
For this reason, I will never buy a PS3.
No biggie though. With my Xbox 360, I'm perfectly satisfied. I did't have that much desire to buy a PS3 anymore anyway after getting the 360. The lack of proper scaling on the PS3 just sealed it.

No problem there. I can roll with that. Just for me, personally, I prefer to wait till features that are more future proof are available before I put down that kinda of money for anything. I knew HD at the time was a range so it was a must that all resolutions were supported for me, but as long as it works for you... thats what matters.
