I suggest if you need to run Framemaker in Classic that you locate a machine that will boot into Mac OS 9. No need to run OS X if you are working in 9 the majority of the time. Most G4 Towers, eMacs and certain G4 iMacs will "dual boot". As an added bonus, these G4 machines can be had realitively inexpensively. G5 iMacs will run Classic as well as all G5 Towers.

I run a G5 Quad and see no need to upgrade to a Mac Pro. I also retain the abiltiy to run my OS 9 programs in Classic. No Intel based Mac can do that out-of-the-box.

Anyone interested in running Windows should consider an Intel Mac with Parallels. My MacBook works well with it and it is very snappy indeed. You can get a non transferable, non-upgradeable OEM version of XP for under $100 and Parallels is $79 (US).

Adobe killed Framemaker because the guys who started Adobe don't run it any more. It's run by marketing people and beancounters, and marketing and beancounting aren't interested in what they perceive as niche markets. I am sure Adobe would drop all Apple support and development if they could stand to walk away from $400 to $500 million a year.

Get a G5 and you should be happy.

I'm in a similar situation, in that FrameMaker is about the only program I still need Classic for (the other is a voice mail player from Lucent). In my case, the FM file is not overly complex, and is only a single file for a single document. Additionally, because it's the user manual for an open-source project, it would be good to switch to something that is free or at least commonly used.

Any suggestions?

I never understood what made FrameMaker so important to those who used it. Could you clue me in?

Frame developed FrameMaker specifically with large technical documents in mind, and so it does (did) a really good job for that task -- plus it was cross-platform, *nix, Mac, Windows. Adobe bought Frame (forget if this was before or after Aldus) as part of a drive to stave off Quark. PageMaker is dead (thankfully!), and the folks at Adobe are working hard to make InDesign be a reasonable replacement for FrameMaker.

The list of good to great products that Adobe has knifed via acquisition is remarkable, but you can't really argue that one company should be developing (say) Illustrator and FreeHand.

Umm, a recommendation from someone who just joined the forum on the day they make this post? NOW I'd be worried it's a scam.
