Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. I just bought a Western Digital 250 gig internal hard drive for my G4 867 (running Tiger) and tried to put it in myself. I put it in the extra HD bay and hooked it up to the gray slave connector. At startup the OS said it didn't recognize the disk and directed me to Disk Utility, which says that its capacity is...128 gigabytes. The info button in Disk Utility gives me this:
Name : WDC WD2500JB-00GVA0
Type : Disk
Disk Identifier : disk0
Media Name : WDC WD2500JB-00GVA0 Media
Media Type : Generic
Connection Bus : ATA
Connection Type : Internal
Connection ID : Device 1
Device Tree : mac-io/ata-4@1f000/@1:0
Writable : Yes
Ejectable : No
Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed : No
Location : Internal
Total Capacity : 128.0 GB (137,438,952,960 Bytes)
S.M.A.R.T. Status : Verified
Disk Number : 0
Partition Number : 0
The install manual said that it must be installed with the 40-pin, 80-conductor cable that came with the hard drive, but I wanted to see what would happen with my current cable. Is that the problem? Any ideas why my computer thinks the HD is 128 gigs? What do I have to do to get it recognized?
