any way to dissassociate my aol screen name from my parents account?

they keep mentioning a desire to leave aol, but i dont want to use my screen name (moved out a few years ago, but the name is still linked to their account). if they cancel do i lose my aim name? any way around it?

You can start a new account using an existing screen name from an existing account and then cancel the other subscription.
Call AOL tech support. They'll tell you how to do it.

Sign up for AOL Instant Messenger or Netscape or some other free AOL service that uses AOL screen names using your current AOL screen name.
That should do it. I think.

My screen name was originally created on AOL, on my sisters account. They since cancelled their AOL account, but I have been using my screen name on AIM without any problems. They've been without AOL for about 2 years now. I don't think you have to do anything at all. It should just keep working. AOL has a habit of never deleting anything. In fact I there is a web page that I made nearly 4 years ago is still being hosted on AOL and I still get Instant messages from people that view the site. I wish AOL would just delete the f'ing thing.
