Is the Mac app store Apple's plan to revitalice interest in the Mac?

Question of the day, given that Developers can now submit their AppStore apps, for their inclusion in the iTunes store very soon.

Bizarrely phrased question, as interest in the Mac has NEVER been greater than it is today.
All four options in your poll are completely beside the point.
The Mac App Store is there to give independent and tiny developers a chance at being discovered and having their apps bought and used by people who don't give a shit about computers.

Yeah the title is awkwardly worded.
In any event, people here may be surprised to hear that I'm a cynical person
With that said, I do believe its apple plan to create a new revenue stream, and exert more control over its platform. Apple has near complete say over the iOS platform, they have little of that on the OSX side of things.
While Jobs promised to keep OSX open in 10.7, that is not required to submit apps, I do not believe this openness will remain in subsequent versions of OSX.

I think it's a fair question, although it's imprecisely stated, as Harlot points out. Macs have never sold as well as they are selling today, so there's no shortage of interest in Mac hardware. It's fair to say, though, that due to Apple's strong focus on the iPlatforms in recent times, many have voiced concerns about the future of the Mac. I think Apple does hope to in part assuage some of those concerns by showing a new Mac-based initiative, and the announcement did succeed in generating some positive headlines about an app store coming to the Mac, given that the world has seen how successful the iOS App Store has been. Attempting to translate some of that success to the Mac platform at least shows that Apple considers Mac OS X to still be worthy of some of its time and developmental resources. Even though more advanced users won't have nearly as much of a need for it, the Mac App Store is a superior alternative to Apple giving Mac OS X the silent treatment. Without a thriving OS X ecosystem around to justify its existence, Mac hardware becomes a stylish, mostly overpriced vehicle for Windows.
While Jobs promised to keep OSX open in 10.7, that is not required to submit apps, I do not believe this openness will remain in subsequent versions of OSX.
That concern apparently crossed many of our minds, but I don't see such a thing happening any time soon, if ever. It's nearly impossible for Apple to turn the Mac as we know it today from a general computing device to a limited computing device as the iPlatforms are. The iPlatforms can afford to be as limited as they are because they rely on general computing devices to manage their content. You can only abstract a user from the complexities of computing to a certain degree before you start cutting off very important functionality, and people aren't used to those kinds of limitations on regular computers.
As far as I'm concerned, if the Mac ever gets turned into a limited computing device, the OS it runs won't be called Mac OS X anymore, and the hardware itself probably won't be called a Mac anymore, either. I don't see it ever happening, quite honestly.

The OS X App Store and iTunes Store will remain very different still.

Ok, I'll kick this thing over a cliff....
I think Apple is going to kill regular desktops with iOS, and perhaps completely abandon the highly profitable desktop pro market for reasons only the anti-Christ knows.

I'll add a terrible metaphor. The Mac App Store is to OS X what Kinect is to XBOX 360.

All congrats to Space Monkey.
I hope a lot of stuff gets thrown, but it better not be poo.
Yeah, that's right, poo - I heard about your species. I know.

Speaking of poo, how about that idea to bring the App Store to the Macs?

Sure. Furious George - the desktop version.

Speaking of backed-up toilets, any word on that rumored iPhone restroom locator app that finally de-prioritizes "high volume" locations?

I think the App stores show that Apple has finally realized some major ideas that will help it become an even better solution. They've also hit the critical mass to be able to continue to move to more vertical integration.
I wonder how long before Apple starts coming out with TVs with their own set top boxes integrated.
