Hey 'Yall,

Does anyone know a workaround for a Sonnet Tempo ATA/100 card requiring that you format a drive with the card? I can't get the PCI card to "see" or mount my existing "in use" 40GB Maxtor ATA/100 drive, and it's got 6 gig's of data on it. The on-board ATA works fine with the drive, but I wanted to exploit the new speed of this drive, and I don't have an easy way of backing up all the data, other than burning about 10 CD-R's! Their web site said nothing about this little thrill. It's basically a card built to plug into a blank brand new out of the box drive, but not for existing drives.

What a PITA.

Thanks!
Brian
Fundementally, the Marksman aims at himself. Bow, arrow, goal, ego all melt into one another. Mushin, "no-mindedness" has then been attained. Skill without thought.

Brian, did you call them yet and ask them?

They're supposed to have pretty good phone support.

Does the Manual that came with the card say anything about this?

I know I set up one of their ata/66 cards for a friend, but I can't remember if we had to format it first or not.

You have to format. The Sonnet cards actually make the computer think the drive is SCSI, not ATA. You have no choice here.

It's probably basically the same as my Turbomax card. As Paul S said, the computer sees it as SCSI, and the drives are formatted differently. You have to format a drive before it will work with the card, and you would have to format the drive again to get it to work with the built-in IDE.
