I can't, for the life of me, figure out where to change the background image which is displayed on the login screen. As default it displays the 'Aqua Blue.jpg' which lies inside /Library/Desktop Pictures.

I tried looking inside /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow folder to see if any of the files in there was pointing to that image but couldn't find anything.

Does anyone have any idea how to change this? I realize it purely cosmetics but now it's also the principle of it

Thanks!

Look where is located the preference file locating your background image.
It should be in ~/library/Preferences/XXXXXX.plist, under your home directory.
( I don't remember the file, and I'm currently under WinNT.)

The same file should exist in (Startup Disk)/Library/Preferences.

I found here the file used to store the mouse speed when no one is logged in.

Try enabling the root user and changing the desktop picture on that account.

I have not tried it, but if this works, it it similar behavior to the "Owner" account in Mac OS 9's multiple users.
I'm cookoo for Cocoa Apps!

can't find it either. used to be available in earlier releases as a qtif file...

id did a find for

"*.qtif" "*.tif*" and even

find / -name "*.tif*" | grep -i desk

and "top" and "picture" etc.

to no avail.

found the answer.

easier than i thought, and a vile, low-end hack, but the mind hadn't wandered there in its own yet:

ok, that worked, but:

only the main screen inherited the chosen image. the second monitor displays "Solid Aqua Blue" but not from "Solid Aqua Blue.tiff" in "/Library/Desktop\ Pictures/Solid\ Colors/" (i tried to replace it, too).

i realize this is and old thread and i may be talking to myself now...but anyone know how to get rid of the "Solid Aqua Blue" you see between choosing to log out and being logged out? it really "clashes" with my black desktop and login window scheme. not that it's killing me.

That blue is from the window server (it's like the 50% gray of Classic MacOS), it's currently not possible to replace it.

Is there a way to change the actual login window? It worked in older versions of X, but in 10.1.1, it doesn't look possible.
