I just bought a 3Com 3CRWE554G72TU Wireless router and it has this feature called "Nitro Mode" the descriptions is as follows
==============================================
Nitro Mode
The presence of an 11b device in your network can adversely affect the
performance of an 11g device, such as the Router. Nitro Mode ensures
that the effects of an 11b device are minimized. 3Com recommends that
you enable Nitro Mode if you have one or more 11b devices in your
network.
Check the Enable Nitro Mode check box to activate Nitro Mode.
The client machines must also support Nitro Mode for this feature to
work.
==============================================
I do have 2 802.11b devices on my network as well as my PowerBook which is Airport Extreme 802.11g. Does anyone know if Nitro Mode is supported by Apple?

The most likely answer is "not likely." Apple supports standards, and this "nitro mode" is NOT a standard. On the other hand, it's most likely that you won't see anything negative about normal 11g speeds because of your 11b devices. I wouldn't sweat it.

my guess that all it does is allow a 11g client to connect at full native speed instead of connecting at the slower speed of 11b to accomadate the slower clients
