Suddenly appeared just after using IChat. See screen grab.

Cannot select it to delete. Floating above everything on screen. Had to delete account to remove. (Does not affect any other account) That was 2 weeks ago. Reappeared yesterday after connecting to another computer over Airport. Do not want to go through exercise again Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If nobody knows what it is, you might be able to find out: install Xcode (with all the developer tools). Close any windows you are not using, then open /Developer/Applications/Performance Tools/Quartz Debug.

Then, in Quartz Debug, choose Tools->Show Window List. As you click or up/down arrow through the windows in the list, you will see that windows (or individual user interface elements) pulsate light-dark. If you find the one that makes that box pulsate, you can then read off its line in the Window List to see what application it belongs to.

Looks like a stuck widget or something. Did you try quitting Dashboard? Does it persist through a reboot?

I had this grey rectantangle appear after I migrated from my 1.5 ghz Alu Powerbook to my new Macbook Pro. I traced it to a funny interaction from Winswitch that got migrated over from the older Powerbook. I un-installed and then re-installed Winswitch and the rectangle went away for me.
