Don't get me wrong here- I love the WWDC keynote today made by Steve Jobs introducing the new 3G iPhones with its new features. BUT! Still no copy/paste and iChat app? Why the world would Steve Jobs not to include these 2 important features?

Tell me what you think ?

I can guarantee at least 5 different IM apps will be on the iPhone within a month of the 2.0 release. No iChat isn't that big of a deal.

No copy/paste, though, just sucks.

It will be interesting to see what happens for AIM/MSN/Jabber for the iPhone: will the first parties offer a client that integrates with Apple's push architecture? Will developers say skip Apple's push and just write clients that disconnect every time you switch apps? Will third party developers run yet another server farm (in addition to Apple's and the IM companies) to manage the exchange between Apple's push servers and the IM servers?

I'm hoping there will be an Adium app that uses Apple's push service.

Adium's current code (libpurple base + UI) is pretty hefty for the iPhone. Maybe they've been secretly working on a slimmed-down version?

How did it come to this? Goodbye PowerPC. | sensory output

I could see people paying $5 for a copy/paste app at the App Store.

Didn't he mention the push thing wouldn't be ready until September? That pretty much sucks.

Precisely. I'm assuming that these remaining niggles will be sorted out once the App Store opens. Is there a reason why we won't see a video-recording application for example?

I don't think stuff like copy and paste will be able to be fixed by a third party developer. I have a feeling their third party app won't be able to 'sit on top of' other apps and wait for input and then capture text from safari or other apps.

The Adium blog had a post regarding the iPhone.
So, in summary: We want to do it, but it will be a lot of work.

mdc nailed it. No background processes makes it unlikely we'll see any utility apps. I'm a big fan of Windows Mobile today screen and unfortunately it doesn't sound like Apple's third party plan would allow something like that.

I have yet to find a single thing about Windows Mobile that I like. I've set up so many phones here to work with our network and every single one of them has been a complete pain in the ass.

Just a naive thought - copy/paste could still be implemented before release, or perhaps in a future update.

The lack of this feature seems pretty high on the "why?!" list.

It sucks that there is no iChat, but I'm pretty sure Apple is just waiting until they have their whole background-push-service-thingamagic working.

I thought the date for these background services to be rolled out was Sept 08. So I bet there will be iChat by then.

With a free AIM app, is there really a need for iChat?

The AIM app now is horribly buggy. Plus it's only AIM, what about MSN or Google chat?

It crashes 24/7. Absolutely useless.

From what I read, it happens once you are signed in on two devices at the same time.

You have to delete and reinstall the AIM app to get it back working.

How stupid is that ?

I don't want a separate handle for my iPhone, and I don't want to be forced to sign off on my Mac all the time.

I use Adium, so that may or may not be a difference. I do get the message via Adium about being signed on twice, as well as my iPhone. However, if I do not click 1 to sign off the other user, it works fine. The only downside is that the message does not go to both mediums.

I really hope iChat comes with the push service, it'd be great if they worked with Microsoft on just "Chat" or something like that, and then the features from that would be moved into iChat on the Mac... good luck on that though.

Yea this AIM app on the iPhone is useless if you sign on with the screen name ever on your Mac or another device. It will open, shows an updated buddy list then crash no matter what you do. I uninstalled and reinstalled it and it worked again until I signed on with the screen name elsewhere.

Try not signing off of one device. As I said, I have had no crashes from the AIM app.

I prefer Adium but even when logged out, I haven't been able to keep AIM going in almost a week now.

AIM 1.1 has been released today and fixes the crashing issues and adds a few new features. Off topic, but a Pandora update as well that adds stereo.
