You can always use Endermen pearls. They teleport you to whatever location you throw them at.

Pre-Release 2 was pre-released yesterday.

Mobs
Animal Breeding! Use wheat to breed. Hold wheat in your hand and they all 'should' follow you. Reports of this being a bit buggy. If you hit an animal in heat, it will stop being in heat.
Snow Golems attack each other when you try to breed them. And User. Use wheat to make friendly towards you.
Endermen now take FOUR standard (non-critical) hits with a diamond sword. Zombies & Zombie pigmen 3.
Endermen now instantly teleport away from water. Agro seems to reset after this. They also dodge all arrows and do not die in the sunlight anymore. New sound effect likely to come in the official release of 1.9
Zombie Pigmen now randomly drop rotten flesh or gold bits instead of everytime.
Chickens avoid lava.

Items/Potions
Golden apples have a sparkly animation.
Golden apple also grants you Regeneration buff for 30 seconds.
Golden nuggets are officially called "Gold nuggets" now.
New Items: glass bottles, several new music discs, blaze powder, spider eyes, fermented spider eyes and magma cream. *Items uses unknown - bottles obviously for 'potions' as mentioned on twitter and not implemented yet. Possibly with official release.
Ender pearls teleports you with the cost of damage when thrown.
Ender perls do not work in MP.
Items can be repaired now, just as Notch specified - combine two damaged items to make one with more uses.
Can't get glass panes back when you break them anymore .
Pumpkins can be “crafted” into 4 Pumpkin Seeds.

Fencing
Wood fences now connect to walls. Fences now only take up the space they appear to, as well as attaching to any solid block adjacent to them. This makes walking through diagonal-oriented fences possible.
Pressure plates on top of fence posts now make sound when you walk on them or next to them. Cannot place pressure plates on top of nether fence.
Fences can be placed like normal blocks.
Normal fences and nether fences don't connect.

Misc.
Hardcore Mode
Fire from lava doesn't burn you for nearly as long.
Auto-jumping has been placed back in.
New ID's for Items and CDs at the bottom of this post.
F5 is back! (Hit twice to see in first person).
Tooltips have purple edges.
Name tag "TESTIFICATE" over the villagers is gone.
Villages seem bigger.
XP Gain from jumping has been removed/fixed.
F8 cinematic mode is back
The changes to fences are awesome. All of them.

I popped on this weekend to redo rounding up my stuff, and finish my treehouse. Still want to do the lookout tower though. The trees are finally getting the way I want them.

I think our new town should have a general store, where we can sell/trade stuff we are carting over. Not everyone needs to bring everything.

Anyone want a music cd? I have two.

I signed into the old server for the last time last night. My inventory is stocked and ready to go for the new map.

I haven't done any of that. I'll need some advance warning or an end date to plan around.

Well it will probably be a few days after 1.9.0 comes out. (Which is actually 1.9.3 those p's aren't fooling anyone.)
My initial plan is to keep hosting the original map on a different port for a while then maybe upping that server too 1.9 but putting it on peaceful. There's no read-only mode for vanilla servers though. I will make the requested world files available once we move. Later on we'll revisit the question of migrating structures. (No i'm not migrating 300m of track)

Migrate structures? Not me. I want to start 100% fresh.

My items are all ready. I'm just farting around on 1.9 in the meantime.

I suppose that might be tempting to a farm of mine, but other than the cactus farm none are really all the well designed.

The only structure I was ever mildly happy with was the tower at Salt Lake City, and even there I should've done it differently.

I'm happy to leave the sandstone castle behind and start new, but I'm really glad we can bring resources. It took me forever to get anything rare. <me hoards 3 stacks of mossy stone>

Well, I was thinking useful creations, but Fry stays because he's a symbol of my old Kingdom and because I'll be changing skins for the new server.

I suppose you're welcome to take your statue and base, though.

You can make blocks out of 9 lapis, I also wouldn't bring planks, logs are better and yo already have some.

I have extra slime and string too.

Is that 5 stacks of wool sek?

I am jealous of your mossy cobble reserves.

Edit: I agree with Blaze, Andi. You should bring wood instead of planks, since one stack of wood equals 4 stacks of planks. Also, if you are doing blocks of lapis, I have probably damn near a stack of blocks I'm not bringing that you can have.

Long time lurker here. Thinking about getting into Minecraft. Quick question: does anyone use higher quality texture packs? Why not?

I get 60fps in far with a 5870 on a 22' screen. I don't see how it would help.

I really haven't seen anything that made me say "Wow! That is soooo much better than stock graphics!"

Not to mention, my iMac chugs and sputters along with the standard visuals at normal render distance. I highly doubt making the graphics any better quality will give me anything other than much slower speeds.

Mostly because it's a pain in the ass to wait for them to be updated with each new version that comes out.

Goofing around in SSP is boring as crap after having spent God-knows-how-long in SMP. Never seeing anyone else's creations gets really old. I'm so ready to start up the new world.

Don't get me wrong, I do like a good amount of texture packs, but the problem lies with the fact we are all enjoying this game in a multiplayer setting. I don't want to build something with an aesthetic in mind that only I can see, and conversely, I don't want to stumble around someone else's work looking at it in a way they never intended.

I would be fine with a texture pack if it was used by everybody on the server, thus having us all experience the same visuals.

Also, now that this game is drawing you into its clutches, I suggest you get in on some sweet MacNN server action when we reboot. You'd be surprised how much more of a life this game takes on when there are other people to distract and inspire you. With Link being absent for quite some time and Bogues nothing more than a ghost that haunts us once and a while we certainly have an open slot.

I think that nails it. That goes to my gripe about the cobblestone texture and how most texture packs made it nice to look at. So now all these players had these nice looking cobblestone structures except everyone on the stock art still saw ass-ugly cobblestone structures.

If you guys want to settle on a texture pack to use we could make the the server suggested texture. Given that it doesn't slow anyone down too horribly.

Must've missed this one. It's 4 stacks of wool and one stack of Iron blocks. Though after our little chat last night I think I might be ditching at least two stacks of wool to open up some more slots.

So last night I continued on what is now known as my Diamond Grid Mine. 2 block high hallways 3 blocks apart at y=12 (which is what several youtube videos said the diamond sweet spot is). Within minutes I had made yet another block of diamond, so I now have 11 in total...99 diamond, awww yeah. This mine is my most successful to date. You may remember that I was burning through resources before I knew we'd be carrying our inventory over, since then I've mined 2+ stacks of Gold and nearly 80 diamond (also enormous amounts of redstone, coal, and iron that was just in my way) with very minimal effort. If anyone wants for more diamond then this is the way to get it fast and easy.

Truth there, I will swap it out. You still have that stack of mossy stone you didn't have room for?

I don't have enough lapis to bother making blocks of it.
