This looks very serious. The laptops apparently freeze under too heavy a load. This might be a graphics driver issue, or maybe a hardware defect. The thread is already 35 pages long.

I read it's due to 3rd party fan control software. In any event, it's not a big concern unless you think Apple won't be able to figure it out and fix it. One poster said, "I received a call back from Apple Support and they confirmed Engineering is aware of the issue and working on it."

Either that or it's a firmware issue that can't address all of the RAM. Similar things happened when the late-2008 MacBook Pro came out.
Also, why is this in the Lounge?

No one will read it if it's not in the Lounge.

You may be right.
We've not had any calls with this issue in our shop yet, and I've not seen a 2011 come in for a repair at all. Our other store has seen a couple of the new units. Anecdotal? Totally.
No matter what it is, I bet Apple will fix it.

Personally I think the thread title is way, way overstated.
What I said in the other thread was:
No problems with my 2011 17" MBP with SSD so far. However I fully expect to experience some teething problems with a CPU/GPU this ridiculously powerful in a laptop. And I expect Apple to fix any issues via replacement, warranty repair, whatever; not a big deal, just the cost of owning the latest and greatest fastest laptop on the planet.

Sounds like it's just a buggy iStat/smcfancontrol.
Haxies causing issues? Shocker.

^ that. SMCfancontrol appears to be a common theme.

My wife's 2011 15" has been fine, love the SSD in it.

Ars Technica is running a story on this issue. They link to a story that a fellow was able to reproduce the freeze on every new MBP (not 13") in an Apple store, while a Genius was watching.
They also say today's Software Update might fix the issue.

I haven't had a problem with my 15" so far. I've used Photoshop, Handbrake and Parallels all at the same time and not a hiccup. Well, other than the fans... very loud! But the computer has worked fine!
