It's just not a good time to be a Republican.
First you have McCain choosing Palin as his VP pick, and tanking his campaign.
Then Palin is found to have violated the Ethics Code in the Troopergate scandal Investigation (which is still going strong)
Also the McCain campaign loosing in such a way that it's spreading to the Senate Races.
And now you have Republican Ted Stevens found guilty for lying about "Gifts" he received.
Better luck next time guys. We'll be on the lookout for you for the 2012 cycle.

The monthlong trial revealed that employees for oil services company VECO Corp. transformed the senator's modest mountain cabin into a modern, two-story home with wraparound porches, a sauna and a wine cellar. Stevens never paid for VECO's work.
The Senate's longest-serving Republican, Stevens said he had no idea he was getting freebies. He said he paid $160,000 for the project and said he believed that covered everything.
Wowsers. How big is this place? I need to get that contractor's phone number.
Most of the contractors are charging over $200 a square foot here for higher end home builds. That means a 2000 square foot home (1000 per floor plus several hundred more square feet for the finished basement) would cost over $400000 to build. Even if you factor the excellent US dollar, that would mean it'd be over US$300000. He claims he paid $160000.

Did anyone follow the bizarre story of the juror that claimed her father was dying? Turns out she went to California to watch a horse race.
When confronted by the judge:
She apologized for lying, and then started a long rambling story about horses, which included references to horse breeding, the Breeders' Cup, drugs, President Ford's son Steven and her condo in Florida being bugged.
When queried by the press;
"He didn't do anything any other congressman or senator or governor or president has not done. He was guilty but these other ones are just as guilty if not more guilty."
When asked if she thought Stevens was guilty, she replied: "I didn't say that."
How the hell did she get on the jury?

They just don't care. The conviction was HUGE news on every news outlet in the state. There are many that feel the whole trial was a sham as well. They feel the trial should have been held in Alaska. (As if *that* would have been a fair trial..)

Correct. The governor gets to name a temporary replacement and we hold a special election within 90 days. I guess we prefer felons over Democrats. 
There are still 60,000+ absentee/questioned ballots etc. to be counted and the lead for Stevens is 3,300. I guess Begich could still end up the winner. The fact that the election is even this close makes me sick.

FiveThirtyEight has some analysis, in way more detail than you want. His conclusion is that it is a tossup, although the numbers for absentees look favorable for Begich. He also seems to think Franken will win.

Latest tally: Begich leads Stevens by 3 votes
The elections division still has over 10,000 ballots left to count today and thousands more through next week, but the latest numbers show Mark Begich leading Sen. Ted Stevens 125,019 to 125,016.
The new numbers, reflecting nearly 43,000 absentee ballots counted today, are from all over the state.

Stevens just lost his bid for his 7th term in the Senate. Begich won by 3724, with 2,500 votes left to count.
Looks like Palin's ship to the Senate has sailed.

Well, if this turns out to be true, Stevens conviction should be overturned on appeal.
Witness against Stevens says he lied on stand
WASHINGTON (AP) - One of the government's witnesses against convicted Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska now says he wasn't truthful on the stand.
David Anderson, who worked on Stevens' house for VECO founder Bill Allen, testified during the trial that there was no agreement with the Justice Department for immunity for him, his family or friends in exchange for his testimony.
Anderson now says he did have an understanding with the Justice Department. This came out Friday in a letter Anderson wrote to U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan.
Stevens' lawyers want a hearing on Anderson's allegations. The Justice Department had no immediate comment.
