Just read this.

I feel the part about Comey "training" the White House is going to be the defense to questions about why he didn't report things at the time.

I looked at it as a sting operation. Having a man on the inside is key. Also, Trump's statement wouldn't be damning enough in a vacuum.

Well, when you report things on time you get fired anyway and painted as a disgruntled employee. I would suspect the timing is all in the relationships. All Comey would have to say is "I was following Trump's orders" and most people would think that's just fine, right?

If it was a sting, he really shouldn't be casually talking about it over lunch.

Sting is probably not the right word, but it makes no sense to resign if you have concerns. If you think Trump could compromise the next FBI head, resigning is the last thing you do.

I do think Wittes is underselling his relationship with Comey though. Which makes me wary.

Not familiar with Crowder. He comes off like a dickhead.

I like Ben however, and his analysis isn't bad, but if the vultures are in fact circling Kushner, it becomes harder to buy Trump was only thinking of himself.

I'm surprised to hear a Greg Louganis AIDS joke from someone who isn't even 30.

BTW, I love that this so far has given us two Trump quotes that are full of projection:
Look he’s a showboat, he’s a grandstander
He was crazy, a real nut job

That saying implies Comey is similar. It's more like the pot calling the washbasin black.

NEW: Pres. Trump expected to retain Marc Kasowitz as private attorney representing him on matters related to Russia probe, @ABC confirms.
Meanwhile, Kasowitz' law partner Joe Lieberman is front runner for FBI chief.

The counter-swipe to the Russia "email" is interesting.

"Doesn't matter that it's fake. If it leaked, the damage would be done."

I don't necessarily disagree, but it says something the system can get subverted to this extent just by making some shit up.

It's a symptom of the political climate. Which is to say our democracy wouldn't be so vulnerable if we hadn't been so busy painting each side as evil incarnate for the past 25 years.

How are they planning to block a Congressional summons? Arrest him for "resisting arrest" and lose him in processing?

A nonprofit issues group is labeling James Comey a political “showboat” in a television ad set to air Thursday, the day the former FBI director testifies on Capitol Hill.
Channeling my inner Lenin, people have too much damn money when they're spending it to attack non-elected officials just for testifying in front of congress.

Prediction: Yet another nothing burger, but leaving enough crumbs to keep the conspiracy theorists engaged.

Lawfare, certainly a biased source, did an article on what the rank and file think of him.

The author needed several paragraphs, right up front, which summarize as "yeah... I know it sounds like bullshit people love the guy this much".

That's different. But yes Wittes outspokenness has been irking me. Simplest answer is hes using the opportunity to get traffic to his blog but otherwise i am suspicious of his motives.

I certainly wouldn't take it as gospel, and Wittes bothers me as well, but the article fits with the lack of dirt.

I'm not sure how much it matters, but I feel obligated to note this particular article wasn't written by Wittes.

A cynical view is of course the guy who burned Hillary is beloved by his employees.

A realistic view is the kind of man who was deputy AG under Bush has the kind of honor and integrity you rarely find anywhere.

I suppose the relevant question here is, is 'asking' for an investigation to be dropped actionable? I assume not.

Looks like the main new things are they discussed the dossier, and Comey did in fact tell Trump he wasn't under investigation a bunch of times.

I'm still thinking through what insights can be gleaned about his firing.

This ultimately hinges on what Flynn did, and whether Trump knew.

The accurate answer is beyond my pay grade, but my personal opinion is that probably should be nothing.

My stab at the accurate answer is throwing the book at the president for an honest mistake is too tough a sell, even with legit grounds.

I think Comey put up a pretty rock-solid argument there was no reason to fire him.
