I'll be passing 6000 sometime this evening thanks to 15 new Dual G4s i have just installed. That's over 300 returns since friday. We are waiting for a new set of software to arrive so the G4s ain't doing nothin but seti till then. shucks. Right now they are OS9 running 3.0, I'll see if i can't get OSX running without freeking out too many of my co-workers.

Finally entered the top ten of our team. Have recently sent WU result #2200. Next goal: Top 10000 overall.

ThreadZ (#8 on the team) will top 3000 some time this evening. Attaboy, or is it attagirl? Atta-being.

Did you know that the top 14 members have done only 116 WUs less than the other 378 combined?!? Just something to think about.

Aw, Danometer, I don't want to think about that. That makes me sad. Kidding, I'm pumped to have a couple g3s at work to crank units. Plus my sad little 120/604 is moving up to a 233/604e, which I'm looking forward to. Just cracked the top 90% with 158wus. Oh I'm in the big money now!

3230 now, have to start managing the transition to 3.0 pretty soon.

Wow-- nearly 400 members now... Which means that the average Team MacNN member has done 266.5 WUs...

Next stop, 4000.

Hello #400! I've completed 400 W/Us as of today! That brings my productivity to:

000-100 WUs -- about 8 months
101-200 WUs -- 49 days
201-300 WUs -- 32 days
301-400 WUs -- 17 days

crunch, crunch, crunch...

Now if I can only make my way back up to 55th place

bockie, you look like you're working on your own version of moore's law here. how much faster can you go? will you place your computer network inside a walk-in freezer to squeeze a few more mhz out? then you could be polar bockie, heh? heh?

okay okay, but it's a very nice speed-up

Just made it to spot #10000 of all users. It took 2625 units to get there. A couple of my machines are running OS X now, so my pace has dropped somewhat
I still might reach 3000 WUs before the end of the month, though.

Just returned WU #3000. Since the 3.0 client my throughput has dropped seriously. Now I aim for 4000 before the end of the year.

101-200 WUs -- 49 days
201-300 WUs -- 32 days

401-500 WUs -- 44 days (WU 500 on 12-02-00)

Hmmm...I just noticed Danometer's recognition in the other thread. My interval times have and will drop for two reasons: SETI 3.0 is slow and my wife and I have moved into an apartment that does not include electricity as a covered utility. As a result, my iMac is only turned-on when it is being used by someone. No longer will I fall asleep to the hum of my Rev B crunching away.

I hope that my upgrades will shorten the WU completion time to *somewhat* counteract the lack of available CPU usage time. Now, when I do work on my iMac, I have the screen color set to 256 Grayscale and run SETI windowshaded and hidden in the background.

crunch, crunch, crunch...gulp, MMMMMMMM #600, good...crunch, crunch, crunch

So that means:

000-100 WUs -- about 8 months
101-200 WUs -- 49 days
201-300 WUs -- 32 days
301-400 WUs -- 17 days
401-500 WUs -- 44 days
501-600 WUS -- 31 days

A moderate increase in time due to always running SETI hidden in the background. I added a 40 G 7200RPM Western Digital HD and an extra 128M RAM to my Rev B. *IF* Newer Technology sends me the iMaxpowr G4 that I bought, my rate will continue to drop.

I've also began to run my iMac full time again. I convinced my wife that the power consumption of my computer is negligible to the cost of the power bill. Plus, I convinced her that my salary raise will be more than enough to cover the cost.

Well, I should have 50 units by monday.
Times (estimated):
50 units, 26 days.
100 units, 46 days.
I think that at or around Feb 4, I will have 100 units.
Where can I get something to calculate my units estimated achieval times?
From there, I don't know.

Just joined Team MacNN (left Macaddict). Got a iMac 233 crunching furiously 24x7 using OS X, PBook G3/400 doing part time crunchy using OS 9.1, and a Pentium III-700 using Win2K. How's that for variety?

Wish the workplace had internet, then I'd get my work machine in the mix (and possibly some co-workers).

Just hit mile marker 176...

# 700 woohoo!!!

000-100 WUs -- about 8 months
101-200 WUs -- 49 days
201-300 WUs -- 32 days
301-400 WUs -- 17 days
401-500 WUs -- 44 days
501-600 WUs -- 31 days
601-700 WUs -- 18 days

Newer Technologies did not send my G4 chip (although I placed the order before their official bankruptcy statement), so I purchased it from MacZone.com. I popped it in and watched my SETI times drop! So now my WU analysis should drop a little but, it should be stablizing. My next hundred WU interval should be typical of my output until I purchase a new machine...which will not happen soon.

Well, now that the 10k milestone finally has been achieved, I aim for the #1 spot in our team. I must admit I have been running the 2.04 and 3.0 clients for as long as possible, but now the dreadful 3.04 client seems to be the only option. This will make the final gap take much longer to wear down. I hope that I can get a few units closer to the top everyday, though.
Happy crunching!

Just added my new G4/500 at home to my lineup; also just hit 5500, roughly one month after the 5k milestone..

Anyone else having trouble with ARA 3.5 not closing an idle connection? Seti 3.0.3 dials up, gets a new WU, then leaves the connection open. I had been using PPPTimer on my beige G3, but I thought that the new version of ARA would have fixed this.

Hey guys! I'm a babe at this: just starting to get some units done.

But tell me - how does Daniel get WU time near 7 hrs? Is SETI@home taking advantage of Altivec? Or has Daniel got some other wizardry up his sleeve?

And while I'm asking questions... which system factors make the most difference - mostly raw MHz (assuming a G3/G4)? ...and can/will SETI take advantage of multiprocessors (while I'm dreaming)?

Thanks... I'd like to know how to contribute best to the team

I'm having some problems with ARA, but that could be because I have a 4 comp network.
It seems to drop, but sometimes it will be on for 2 or 3 hrs before going off.

Im sorry to say there are no speed secrets used to get my results. Most of the WUs returned by me have been done with the 2.04 client running on G3/G4 400-500 Mhz, which required about 5 hrs to get done. This way the average dropped. With the current dreadful 3.03 client this is not possible. The same machines now average something like 11 hrs. I really would like the Berkely folks to add a stat feature that would weigh a 2.04 WU as 1 "Stat unit", 3.0 as 1.4 and 3.03 as 2.2 (or some more realistic values based on results received by Berkely). This way interest could be kept up. I now see that many people are not putting the same effort in getting WUs done, since their average will be dropping dramatically.

I'm finding that my Pismo (G3) 400 takes 15-20 hours (running in background, using Peek-a-Boo to reduce CPU priority of other apps to "Low", with SETI to "High").
This is 3.0.3, obviously.
The times vary QUITE A BIT from one WU to another.
Is this surprisingly slow? Is the variation common?

Your Pismo runs the same as my B&W G3-400.
My times are 16-21 hrs, but that is because this machine is my internet router as well.

Thanks, guys for giving me some perspective.

Even at my sluggish G3/400 (+ a G3/250) pace, it's interesting that my indiv stats (with only 12 units done) puts me "above 62%" of SETI participants -- weird!!

The vast majority of folks that just do a few and then forget about it.

for the person wondering about the fast times:
no SETI doesn't use altivec

BUT

according to the SETI FAQ's sheet, it does say that future versions of seti will be optimized for dual processors..........and im sure all you MP people out there will hold them to that!

as for what i have crunching..
1.) "The Tower of Power" Powermac 6500/225 603e (64MB Ram) 256k cache
2.) iMac DV 400

#800!!! Go Rev B G4!

000-100 WUs -- 197 days
101-200 WUs -- 49 days
201-300 WUs -- 32 days
301-400 WUs -- 17 days
401-500 WUs -- 44 days
501-600 WUs -- 31 days
601-700 WUs -- 18 days
701-800 WUs -- 25 days (Have I mentioned I hate v3.03? )

I thought that my times would have dropped, but the newest version of SETI has so much analysis that I have not achieved the level of productivity for which I was hoping. I *will* have my times decrease because I WILL NOT let Team OcUK over-take us!!! I will try to tweak my system to complete WUs more quickly!

Hmmm...With all of the RC5 discussion I didn't notice that I had surpassed 900 SETI W/Us. Plus, this post gets the thread back on topic.

000-100 WUs -- 197 days
101-200 WUs -- 49 days
201-300 WUs -- 32 days
301-400 WUs -- 17 days
401-500 WUs -- 44 days
501-600 WUs -- 31 days
601-700 WUs -- 18 days
701-800 WUs -- 25 days
801-900 WUs -- 29 days

Well so much for reduced SETI times. I was hoping to at least reach 25 days, but no such luck. Maybe next time! Ooooh, next update puts me into the "I have a chance to be featured on SETI@Home's webpage" category. That would be the one "g" mark!

Okay, *now* I'm approaching 6000 WUs.

We laid off a few people at my agency recently, so 4 iMacs and 2 G4s went into storage.. Of course, the G4s come back out this week for Unreal Tournament.

I am sort of new to Seti. I have a PowerMac G4 Dual 450 with OS X and Seti 3.0.3, and it states that it takes 30 hours per W/U, however it only takes 15. Anybody know why this is?

Also my Seti client says I have completed 3 W/U's but the Seti stats page says I have completed 0 with 90 hours computing time.

I am clint on the MacNN Seti.

Keep crunching, it may fix itself after a little while.
I'll have to let one of the pros help you out, but if you want to, also run RC5.
It will use your second processor, which SETI will not.
Go to distributed.net.
Join team macnn. (note, takes about 2 days before anything will show up, be patient).

Just crossed 6200, about 100 WUs per week on average.

As the summer draws, however, I'm going to sleep my idling machines instead of letting them continue to crunch-- save on power costs and help keep my office cool. I mean, I love staying in the top 10 of the team, but....

I thought I was included already, but I wasn't. I have now added my lowly 15 units to the MacNN pool. The crappy Pentium III 500's at my work complete a unit in just under 54 hours! Somehow I think a 400MHz G4 beats this...

Thank god I have a Mac at home. Unfortunately for Team MacNN, it's a PowerBook G4, so I don't run S@H on it... still, I might test a unit or two just to see how fast it is compared to the sluggish Wintel boxes.
